ISO 21898 Packaging - Flexible Medium Bulk Containers (FIBCs) for Non-Hazardous Goods
Material, construction and design requirements for flexible medium bulk containers (FIBCs) intended to contain non-hazardous solid materials in powder, granule or paste form and designed to be lifted from above by integral or detachable devices, in the ISO 21898 standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). , type testing, certification and marking requirements are described. This standard also provides guidance on the selection and safe use of flexible medium bulk containers (FIBCs).
For the purposes of this standard,
- The term flexible intermediate bulk container (FIBC) refers to an intermediate bulk container, the body of which is made of flexible material such as woven fabric, plastic film or paper, designed to contact the contents directly or through an inner liner, and foldable when empty.

- One-time flexible medium bulk container refers to a freight container designed for one filling only. Such containers cannot be reused.
- The term FIBC type refers to a freight container with at least equal performance, manufactured using similar materials and construction methods with the same nominal cross-section dimensions.
- The term safe working load refers to flexible medium bulk containers that are certified. This load is the maximum load that can be carried in service.
- The factor of safety expression expresses the ratio between the final test load in the cyclic top lift test and the safe working load value, rounded down. Safety factors are shown in the standard.
