Boxes for the transit packaging industries must be as light as possible, yet robust to contain and protect the contents, and also have the strength to withstand the requirements of transport, handling and stacking in service. In this respect, strength is obtained in paper and cardboard packaging materials tested in compression with the box crush test (BCT).
As in-transit packaging is subject to a variety of loadings, particularly during transit, suppliers may also request tests modified to suit specific customer needs.
International industry quality assurance procedures for box collapse (compression) testing may require self-leveling compression plates to follow the failure pattern, or some standards stipulate that only the top must be rotated globally to meet this requirement. Some standards use opposite sides or corners of the box, rigid clamping plates when loading.
Generally, in box collapse (BCT) testing, the package is loaded at a constant rate up to rated load or failure.
The two international standards based on box collapse (BCT) tests are:
The ISO 12048 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), defines a test method for determining the compression resistance of completed, filled transport packages. This test method is used to evaluate the performance of a package in terms of strength or the protection it offers to its contents when subjected to compressive forces.
The TAPPI T 825 standard, developed by the Pulp, Paper and Conversion Industry Technical Association (TAPPI), defines a test method for measuring the ability of corrugated or solid fiber shipping containers to resist external compression forces. This method can be applied in several ways. For quality studies, the empty container is usually tested. For compression resistance study, tests are performed with the inner packing in place. Testing for the overall performance of the entire package is done with the container filled with its contents and all inner packagings. In many packages, the share of contents and inner packaging bears part of the load.
Our organization also provides box collapse (BCT) testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
