EN 14338:2003, a European standard , provides a test method for evaluating the transfer or migration of certain volatile and semi-volatile substances through paper and cardboard. This test method was developed for paper and cardboard intended for contact with dry, fat-free foodstuffs and cooking materials. In the latter case, modified polyphenylene oxide (MPPO) is considered as a substitute simulant for oily contact. This material is also considered as a substitute simulation for olive oil.

This standard has also been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) with the following title: TS EN 14338 Paper and cardboard in contact with foodstuffs - Similarly, conditions for the determination of migration from paper and cardboard using modified polyphenylene oxide (MPPO).
This test method is applied to evaluate the effect of food properties and compound properties on the transition from carton to food. Modified polyphenyleneoxide (MPPO) in no case underestimates migration and is considered a suitable material for dry foods.
