Iodine, also called iodide, is a type of mineral found naturally in the earth's soils and ocean waters. Very salty water and plant-based food contain iodine, and this mineral is most commonly found in iodized salt. It is important to get enough iodine in the diet. It regulates hormones in the body, fetal development, and more. If the iodine level is low, supplementation is recommended. An essential mineral, iodine is used by the thyroid gland to make thyroid hormones, which control many functions in the body, including growth and development.
Iodine is a black, shiny, crystalline solid. When heated, it sublimes to form a purple vapor. Photography was the first commercial use for iodine. Today, iodine has many commercial uses. Iodide salts are used in pharmaceuticals and disinfectants, printing inks and dyes, catalysts, animal feed supplements, and photographic chemicals. Iodine is also used to make polarizing filters for LCD screens.
Iodine is found in sea water as iodide. It is only present in trace amounts but is assimilated by seaweeds. In the past, iodine was obtained from seaweed. Now the main sources of iodine are iodate minerals, natural saltwater deposits from the evaporation of ancient seas, and brackish water from oil and salt wells.
In the tests and analyzes carried out in our organization, which has a wide range of technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and applies the most modern methods, national and international standards and legal regulations in force are complied with. Among the numerous tests carried out in this context, there are also iodine (I) testing services within the framework of elemental analysis.
