UN ECE R53 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of L3 category vehicles in terms of installation of lighting and light signal equipment.
ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.
Regulation No. 53 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — It covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of L3 category vehicles related to the installation of lighting and light signaling devices and the tests applied accordingly.
Lighting and light signal devices must be installed in such a way as to maintain the features specified in this Regulation and ensure that the vehicle complies with the requirements of this Regulation, regardless of the vibrations to which they may be exposed, under normal use conditions. Lighting lamps should be placed in such a way that their correct orientation can be easily achieved.
For all light signaling devices, the reference axis of the lamp when fitted to the vehicle must be parallel to the vehicle's bearing plane on the road; it will also be perpendicular to the vehicle's median longitudinal plane for side reflectors and parallel to this plane for all light signaling devices. in all directions ∀ A tolerance of 3° will be allowed. In addition, if assembly specifications have been given by the manufacturer, they will be complied with.
Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
