1907/2006 (EC) Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH)

Regulation 1907/2006 (EC) on the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals, in short, the REACH directive, is a legal regulation that came into force in 2007 to make the production and use of chemicals safe in European Union countries. The REACH directive includes the identification, evaluation and control of chemicals produced, imported and placed on the European Union market. To date, more than 20 thousand chemicals are known and their potential risks have been identified. In this way, the countries of the European Union have the legal and technical means to guarantee a high level of protection to all against the risks associated with chemicals.

1907/2006 (EC) Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH)

Today it is no longer possible to manufacture or import substances if they are not registered. In short, according to the principle set by REACH, if there is no information, there is no market. In this regard, it is important for the supplier companies to check whether the substances in the products used have these chemicals and whether they are recorded correctly. Registrations are made through the website of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

The objectives of the REACH directive can be briefly explained as follows:

  • Protecting human health and the environment from the potential risks of chemical substances
  • Generating uniform and transparent information about the nature and risks of substances, as is or in a mixture, from the supplier to the end customer
  • Securing the handling of chemicals by workers
  • To increase the competitiveness of the industry, especially the chemical sector, which is a key sector of the European Union economy.

Substances covered by the REACH directive are:

  • All substances, including natural substances, organic substances and metals (mixtures used in industrial processes such as cleaning products, paints)
  • Substances found in articles such as textiles, furniture, computer equipment or electronic compounds

Substances of very high concern falling under the REACH directive are:

  • carcinogenic substances
  • mutagenic substances
  • Reproductive toxic substances
  • Persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic substances
  • Very persistent and very bioaccumulative substances
  • Substances of concern such as endocrine disruptors
