ISO 2808 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Film Thickness

ISO 2808 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Film Thickness

The ISO 2808 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), describes test methods for measuring the thickness of coatings applied to a substrate. This standard defines test methods for determining wet film thickness, dry film thickness, and film thickness of uncured powder layers. For each test method described, this standard provides an overview of its application area, current standards and precision. Information on measuring the film thickness on rough surfaces is in the annex to the standard (Annex B). On the other hand, information on measuring the film thickness on wooden surfaces is included in Annex C.

ISO 2808 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Film Thickness

This standard consistently lists individual coatings applied in a multi-layer system, referring to the first coating applied to the substrate. Some other standards that refer to individual test methods are numbered in reverse order.

For the purposes of this standard,

  • Film thickness refers to the distance between the surface of the film and the surface of the substrate.
  • Wet film thickness refers to the thickness of the newly applied wet coating material and is measured immediately after application.
  • Dry film thickness refers to the thickness of the coating remaining on the surface when the coating cures.
  • The thickness of the uncured powder layer refers to the thickness of the newly applied coating material in powder form and is measured immediately after application and before firing.
  • The surface area concerned refers to the part of an object that is or will be covered with a coating and for which the coating is required for serviceability or appearance.
  • Minimum local film thickness refers to the lowest value of local film thickness found in the relevant surface area of a given test specimen.
  • Maximum local film thickness refers to the highest value of local film thickness found in the relevant surface area of a given test specimen.
  • Average film thickness is the arithmetic mean of all individual dry film thicknesses in the test area, or the result of gravimetric determination of the thickness.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides test services for the determination of film thickness for paints and varnishes, within the scope of ISO 2808 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
