Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCP) are a mixture of chlorinated hydrocarbons with a chain length of 10-13 carbon atoms and a chlorine content of 40-70 percent. Medium chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCP), on the other hand, are a mixture of chlorinated hydrocarbons with a chain length of 14-17 carbon atoms and a chlorine content range of 40-70 percent.
SCCPs are used as flame retardants and plasticizers in plastics, as well as as lubricants and coolants for metal forming processes.
In the clothing and footwear industries, SCCP and MCCPs are used as flame retardants or plasticizers in plastics, rubbers, inks, paints, adhesives and surface coatings. It is also found as impurities in degreasing agents for leather production. Apart from clothing and footwear, these compounds are used as additives in lubricants or coolants used in metalworking, metal cutting or metal forming.
However, the use of these chlorinated paraffins has been restricted for various reasons. Regulations in major markets around the world restrict the presence of SCCPs in finished products. Leading clothing and footwear brands have banned the use of SCCPs in their products. SCCPs are recognized as a persistent organic pollutant and a very persistent and very bioaccumulative substance. They are toxic to aquatic organisms at low concentrations and cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment at certain exposure levels.
Repeated exposure to SCCPs or MCCPs causes skin dryness or cracking and eye irritation, but is generally considered to be of low toxicity to humans.
Based on chemical and physical properties similar to SCCPs, MCCPs are also expected to be persistent and bioaccumulative in the environment. MCCPs are considered toxic by some organizations and are targeted for risk assessments.
In the ISO/DIS 22818 standard published by the International Standards Organization (ISO), it is used in textile products, especially in the printing of coated fabrics made of polymers.A chromatographic method is described for determining the amount of short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in buttons made of a and polymer by the solvent extraction method.
Our organization also provides testing services for chlorinated paraffins (SCCP and MCCP), with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
