Metallographic tests are used in damage analysis in various ways. Classical metallography consists of cutting sections along specimens, embedding them in synthetic resin, grinding and polishing until the surface is smooth. This allows the observation of very fine structures under a light microscope with magnification up to 1000x. Even greater magnifications can be achieved with scanning electron microscopy, supported by microanalytical determination of the surface using the connected EDX system.
