TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) Tests
Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) is a chemical analysis method used to detect the presence of hazardous elements in a waste. This method includes the simulation of leakage from a landfill and provides a rating proving whether the waste is hazardous to the environment. This rating determines the waste management methodology adopted by the company to dispose of the waste later.

TCLP metals and TCLP volatile matter tests are performed in advanced laboratories. These tests mainly determine the following:
- Mobility of organic and inorganic pollutants in waste materials
- Hazardous and non-hazardous wastes for disposal in the appropriate landfill
- Leaking liquids reacting with solid waste under simulated landfill conditions
- Quantity of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) listed pollutants (these pollutants are likely absorbed into soil and groundwater)
- Possible public health or environmental health hazards in the sludge tested
Toxicity characteristic leaching analysis helps to explore all possible options for safe disposal of hazardous materials.
These test methods are generally the same as the procedure detailed by the EPA:
- Separation of liquid waste: Liquids with less than 0,5 percent dry solids are filtered through glass fiber to create a TCLP extract. Wastes containing 0,5 percent or more dry matter are separated and stored for further analysis.
- Particle size reduction: Using a 9,5 mm sieve, the solid material is filtered and prepared for extraction by cutting, crushing or grinding to a particle size of 1 cm or less.no.
- Extraction of solid material: The solid material is then extracted with a slightly acidic liquid equal to 20 times its weight for at least 18 hours. The materials are placed in a drum to simulate the percolating action of water seeping from the waste in the landfill.
- Final separation: The liquid waste is then separated from the solid waste by a glass fiber filter. The solid material is discarded and then the liquid components are evaluated.
- TCLP test analysis: Finally, all inorganic and organic materials are identified using EPA-approved methods.
Our organization also provides TCLP (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) testing services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
