Allergic/Dermatological Tests

Allergic/Dermatological Tests

Allergic skin reactions present as red, raised, and itchy skin. Skin allergies can be irritating and painful. The main causes of allergies are common skin exposure to fragrances, preservatives, poison ivy, various drugs or foods, and irritants. If an allergic skin reaction causes redness or discoloration, some tests are needed to understand what is causing it. However, most of the time, when companies producing food and cosmetics develop a new product, they pass it through allergic or dermatological tests and analyzes in advanced laboratories before presenting it to consumers.

Allergic/Dermatological Tests

In general, patch allergy testing is a reliable and non-invasive allergy testing method. With the patch test, the skin is exposed to allergens and then signs of an allergic reaction are observed. These results, paired with the person's medical history, help confirm whether a particular substance is causing allergic symptoms. In the USA today, the American standard series is used to test for allergies, which includes the 80 most common allergens that affect patients. In addition, the standard series with a more restricted selection of allergens is used for reactions involving the mucous membrane lining the mouth or the area surrounding the mouth. Patch testing does not test for nasal, sinus, or respiratory allergies.

Millions of people today have food allergies and experience adverse reactions to products with food allergens. Most reactions cause mild symptoms, but some are severe and can be life threatening. There is no cure for food allergies, although new treatments are being developed. Finding out which foods cause an allergic reaction requires medical diagnosis and absolute avoidance of those foods. The most common food allergens are: milk, eggs, fish (sea bass, halibut, cod), shellfish (crab, lobster, shrimp), tree nuts (almonds, walnuts), peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.

Cosmetic products, such as soaps, lotions, face and eye make-up, fragrances, cause allergic reactions in some people. Allergic reactions are an overreaction of the immune system to generally harmless substances. Allergic reactions to cosmetics often present as itchy, red rashes on the skin or as contact dermatitis.
