ASTM F3512-21 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Wind Safety and Durability of Market Umbrellas

ASTM F3512-21 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Wind Safety and Durability of Market Umbrellas

The ASTM F3512-21 standard, published by the American Association for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is designed to evaluate market umbrellas on the basis of wind safety and durability to determine their suitability in a use environment. Two different scenarios are followed in this standard:

ASTM F3512-21 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Wind Safety and Durability of Market Umbrellas

  • Procedure A is a safety scenario that aims to test the structural strength of market umbrellas against the uniform wind force produced by a wind tunnel.
  • Procedure B is a wind endurance scenario that aims to determine the ability of market umbrellas to perform in a high wind weather environment over an extended period of time.

The performance of market umbrellas is then rated for safety and durability using the Beaufort scale as shown in the standard annex (Annex A1).

Procedure A is an assessment of their structural integrity i.e. mast, frame, canopy and foundation components by subjecting market umbrellas to a uniform wind generated by a wind tunnel. Procedure B, on the other hand, is an assessment of umbrella and component durability by subjecting market umbrellas to a uniform wind produced by a wind tunnel for a fixed period of time.

The test methods described in this standard apply to many types of umbrellas designed for use in the home environment such as pool or terrace areas, in recreational areas such as the beach, pool or tennis courts, and in theme parks, water parks, resorts, hotels, restaurants, cafes and other environments.

These test methods are suitable for both end users and manufacturers to evaluate the performance characteristics of market umbrellas and base mount components. End users use these testing methods to determine how well market umbrellas and key components meet their particular application and usage conditions. Manufacturers of market umbrellas and base mount components use these test methods to determine wind performance characteristics in existing or proposed designs.

These test methods are not intended to assess cleaning or other weather stress from wear and tear in the actual use environment.
