EN 60851 Winding Wires - Test Methods

The EN 60851 standard, which is a European standard, consists of the following sections under the main heading "Winding wires - Test methods":

EN 60851 Winding Wires - Test Methods

  • EN 60851-1 Part 1: General
  • EN 60851-2 Part 2: Determination of dimensions
  • EN 60851-3 Part 3: Mechanical properties
  • EN 60851-4 Part 4: Chemical properties
  • EN 60851-5 Part 5: Electrical properties
  • EN 60851-6 Part 6: Thermal properties

The EN 60851-1 standard describes methods for calculating the cyclic rating factor for cables where the internal thermal capacitance can be neglected. For the purposes of this standard, bonding layer refers to a material that is deposited on an enameled wire and has the function of bonding the wires together. Bundled wire refers to a winding wire consisting of several small diameter insulated wires placed together without a predetermined geometric position and with or without additional coating.

The EN 60851-2 standard describes a test method for determining dimensions (Test 4). Definitions, general notes on test methods, and complete test methods for winding wires are included in the first chapter. Technical revisions of the note include the recognition of the use of optical micrometers in determining the dimensions of round and rectangular enameled wire.

The EN 60851-3 standard describes the following test methods for winding wires:

  • Test 6: Elongation
  • Test 7: Springing
  • Test 8: Flexibility and commitment
  • Test 11: Resistance to abrasion
  • Test 18: Heat bonding

Definitions, general notes on test methods, and complete test methods for winding wires are included in the first chapter.

The EN 60851-4 standard describes the following test methods for winding wires:

  • Test 12: Resistance to solvents
  • Test 16: Resistance to refrigerants
  • Test 17: Solderability
  • Test 20: Resistance to transformer oil

Definitions, general notes on test methods, and complete test methods for winding wires are included in the first chapter.

The EN 60851-5 standard describes the following test methods for winding wires:

  • Test 5: Electrical resistance
  • Test 13: Breakdown voltage
  • Test 14: Continuity of insulation
  • Test 19: Dielectric dissipation factor
  • Test 23: Pin hole

In the latest update to this standard, the use of carbon brush electrodes for counting discontinuities during high voltage continuity testing has been added as an alternative to the V-groove pulley electrode and the descriptions in breakdown voltage testing for round wires and fibrous coated wires larger than 2.500 mm. Definitions, general notes on test methods, and complete test methods for winding wires are included in the first chapter.

The EN 60851-6 standard describes the following test methods for winding wires:

  • Test 9: Heat shock
  • Test 10: Transition
  • Test 15: Temperature index
  • Test 21: Mass loss

Definitions, general notes on test methods, and complete test methods for winding wires are included in the first chapter.
