IEC 60204-1 Safety of Machinery - Electrical Equipment of Machines - Part 1: General Requirements

IEC 60204-1 Safety of Machinery - Electrical Equipment of Machines - Part 1: General Requirements

The IEC 60204-1 standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), describes the requirements for electrical, electronic and programmable electronic equipment and systems for machines that are not manually portable in operation, including a group of machines working together in a coordinated manner.

IEC 60204-1 Safety of Machinery - Electrical Equipment of Machines - Part 1: General Requirements

Equipment covered by this standard starts at the point where the supply is connected to the electrical equipment of the machine. In the latest update to this standard, new requirements have been added to address applications involving power drive systems, as well as electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements, overcurrent protection requirements, requirements for determining the short-circuit current rating of electrical equipment, and connection requirements and terminology have been updated.

This standard provides requirements and recommendations for the electrical equipment of machines to encourage:

  • Safety of persons and goods
  • Consistency of control response
  • Ease of use and maintenance

Further guidance on the use of this standard is included in the annex to the standard (Annex F). It is also included in the standard in some way to help understand the interrelationship of the various elements of a machine and its associated equipment. This figure is a block diagram of a typical machine and related equipment showing the different elements of electrical equipment discussed in this standard. This figure shows that all elements taken together, including guards, software, and documentation, make up the machine, and one or more machines, often working together with at least one level of control, make up a production system.

Additional and special requirements applied to electrical equipment of machines with the following features are outside the scope of this standard:

  • Machines designed for outdoor use
  • Machinery designed to use, process or produce potentially explosive material
  • Machinery designed for use in potentially explosive or flammable atmospheres
  • Machines that pose special risks when producing or using certain materials
  • Machinery designed for use in mines

Our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it has given for businesses in various sectors, Within the scope of the IEC 60204-1 standard, it also provides testing services in line with the general requirements for machine safety and electrical equipment of machines.
