IEC 60695-2-11 Fire Hazard Testing - Part 2-11: Glowing/Hot Wire Based Test Methods - Glow Wire Flammability Test Method for End Products (GWEPT)

IEC 60695-2-11 Fire Hazard Testing - Part 2-11: Glowing/Hot Wire Based Test Methods - Glow Wire Flammability Test Method for End Products (GWEPT)

In the IEC 60695-2-11 standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), a test method to be performed on the final product is described. This test method is intended to simulate the effects of thermal stresses produced by an electrically heated source to represent a fire hazard. This test method is used to check that, under defined test conditions, a final product exposed to an electrically heated source either has a limited flammability ability or, if ignited, a limited ability to spread flame. However, fire hazard analysis, flammability aspects and spread of flame to other products are not covered by this standard.

IEC 60695-2-11 Fire Hazard Testing - Part 2-11: Glowing/Hot Wire Based Test Methods - Glow Wire Flammability Test Method for End Products (GWEPT)

Essentially, this basic security standard focuses on methods.

This standard should be read together with the IEC 60695-2-10 standard. In the last update of this standard, many new terms and definitions have been added to this standard.

The main goal of the IEC 60695-2-11 standard is to provide guidance on how to:

  • Preventing ignition caused by an electrically powered component part
  • Containing any fire in the event of ignition within the enclosure limits of the electrotechnical product

It is also an aim of this standard to minimize any flame spreading outside the enclosure of the product and to minimize the harmful effects of fire wastes such as heat, smoke, toxicity or corrosiveness.

In electrotechnical equipment, overheated metal parts can act as ignition sources. In glow wire tests, a glow wire is used to simulate such an ignition source.

Standard IEC 60695-2-10 describes a glow wire test apparatus and general test procedure. The IEC 60695-2-12 standard defines a glow wire flammability index test method for materials, and the IEC 60695-2-13 standard defines a glow wire ignition temperature.
