IEC 62660 Secondary Lithium-Ion Batteries for Propulsion of Electric Road Vehicles

IEC 62660 Secondary Lithium-Ion Batteries for Propulsion of Electric Road Vehicles

The IEC 61960 standard, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), consists of the following subsections under the main title "Secondary lithium-ion batteries for the propulsion of electric road vehicles":

IEC 62660 Secondary Lithium-Ion Batteries for Propulsion of Electric Road Vehicles

  • IEC 62660-1 Part 1: Performance testing
  • IEC 62660-2 Part 2: Reliability and abuse testing
  • IEC 62660-3 Part 3: Safety requirements
  • IEC TR 62660-4 Part 4: Candidate alternative test methods for internal short-circuit testing of IEC 62660-3

The IEC 62660-1 standard describes the performance and lifetime tests of secondary lithium-ion batteries used for propulsion of electric vehicles, including battery electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. This standard provides test procedures for determining key properties of lithium-ion batteries for vehicle propulsion applications with regard to capacity, power density, energy density, storage life and cycle life. This standard provides standard test procedures and conditions for testing key performance characteristics of lithium-ion batteries for vehicle propulsion applications, which are indispensable to ensure a basic level of performance and to obtain key data on batteries for various battery systems and battery pack designs.

The IEC 62660-2 standard defines test procedures for observing the reliability and abuse behavior of secondary lithium-ion batteries and battery blocks used in the propulsion of electric vehicles, including battery electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. This standard describes standard test procedures and conditions for key properties of lithium-ion batteries for use in battery and hybrid electric vehicle propulsion. The tests are indispensable for obtaining key data on the reliability and abuse behavior of lithium-ion batteries for use in various designs of battery systems and battery packs. This standard provides a standard classification of the definition of test results to be used for the design of battery systems or battery packs.

The IEC 62660-3 standard describes test procedures and acceptance criteria for the safety performance of secondary lithium-ion batteries and battery blocks used in the propulsion of electric vehicles, including battery electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. This international standard is intended to determine the essential safety performance of batteries used in a battery pack and system under the intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse or event during the normal operation of electric vehicles. The battery safety requirements in this standard are based on the assumption that batteries are used properly within the voltage, current and temperature limits specified by the cell manufacturer in a battery pack and system. Evaluation of the safety of batteries during transport and storage is not within the scope of this standard.

The IEC 62660-4 standard provides test data for candidate alternative test methods for internal short-circuit testing according to the IEC 62660-3 standard. The internal short-circuit test described in this standard aims to simulate the internal short-circuit of a battery caused by conductive particle contamination and to verify the battery's safety performance under these conditions. This standard applies to secondary lithium-ion batteries and battery blocks used in the propulsion of electric vehicles, including battery electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. This standard does not cover cylindrical batteries.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides secondary lithium-ion batteries testing services for the propulsion of electric road vehicles within the scope of the IEC 62660 standard.
