ISO 11997 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Resistance to Cyclic Corrosion Conditions

ISO 11997 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Resistance to Cyclic Corrosion Conditions

In the ISO 11997 standard developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), test methods are presented to determine the resistance of paints and varnishes to cyclic corrosion conditions.

ISO 11997 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Resistance to Cyclic Corrosion Conditions

In fact, the ISO 11997 standard consists of the following two parts under the main title "Paints and varnishes - Determination of resistance to cyclic corrosion conditions":

  • ISO 11997-1 Part 1: Wet (saline fog) / dry / damp
  • ISO 11997-2 Part 2: Wet (saline fog) / dry / humidity / UV light

The ISO 11997-1 standard defines a test method for determining the resistance of coatings to one of the four defined wet (salt fog) / dry / humid conditions using specified solutions.

The ISO 11197-2 standard defines a test method for determining the resistance of coatings to a given cycle of wet (salt fog) / dry / humidity / UV light conditions using a specific solution.

Coatings of paints, varnishes and similar materials are exposed in the laboratory to either of the wet and dry conditions specified in these standards, or to cyclic wet and dry corrosion and UV exposure conditions, using specified salt solutions in a cabinet to simulate processes.

In general, no correlation is expected between such outdoor weather conditions and laboratory testing, due to the large number of factors influencing the degradation process. Correlation can only be expected if the influence of important parameters (e.g. the nature of the pollutant, the spectral distribution of incident radiation in the relevant photochemical region, the temperature of the sample, the type and cycle of wetting, and relative humidity) on the coating is known.

In contrast to outdoor weather conditions, laboratory tests in a cabin are performed with a reduced number of variables that can be controlled and therefore whose effects are more reproducible.

The test method described is also applied to check whether the quality of a paint system is maintained.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services to determine the resistance of paints and varnishes to cyclic corrosion conditions within the scope of ISO 11997 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
