The ISO 12922 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), describes the minimum requirements for non-fire resistant and less flammable hydraulic fluids for hydrostatic and hydrodynamic systems in general industrial applications. This standard is not intended for use in aerospace and power generation applications where different requirements apply. This standard is designed to provide guidance to suppliers and end users of less hazardous fluids and manufacturers of hydraulic equipment using them.

In the ISO 6743-4 standard, different types of fluids used in hydraulic applications are classified. Of these fluid types, only the following are covered within the scope of the ISO 12922 standard:

Hydraulic fluids make up a large part of the industrial lubricants market. Mineral oil based fluids It is the most common type of hydraulic fluid, but in some applications the use of these fluids poses a fire risk. In such cases, fire resistant or less flammable liquids have been developed to increase safety in order to reduce the risk to employees. But even refractory fluids can ignite at very high temperatures. The flammability behavior of the fluids defined in this standard covers a very wide range. In order to select the appropriate fluid for this percentage, the hazard level must be known.
Meanwhile, the properties of these fluids can differ significantly from conventional mineral oil-based products. For example, some refractory liquids contain water.
It is recommended that this standard be considered in conjunction with the ISO 7745 standard to ensure that fire resistant hydraulic fluids will perform as expected.
