ISO 6245 Petroleum Products - Determination of Ash

The ISO 6245 standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), is intended for the determination of the ash content of petroleum products, such as distillate and residual fuel oils, crude oil, lubricating oils, waxes and other petroleum products, where ash-forming components are normally considered undesirable impurities or pollutants. A test method is defined. Ash can be caused by oil-soluble or water-soluble metallic compounds, or by foreign solids such as dirt and rust.

ISO 6245 Petroleum Products - Determination of Ash

This test method is applied to products with ash content in the range of 0,001 percent m/m to 0,180 percent m/m. However, it does not apply to products containing ash-forming additives, including certain phosphorus compounds. The analysis of used or unused lubricating oils containing additives, used engine crankcase oils, lead-containing lubricating oils or certain non-hydrocarbon diesel fuels is determined by following another ISO standard, which includes the step of producing sulfated ash with a higher melting point.

For the purposes of the ISO 6245 standard, percent m/m is used to represent the mass fraction of a material.

For certain types of samples, the test results do not quantify all metal compounds that can form ash. Some unused lubricating oils and distillate fuel oils contain low molecular mass metal inorganic additives (eg sodium and potassium) to which the metal oxide may sublimate below the temperatures specified in this standard.

The ash content of petroleum products is generally low. Ash is defined as the inorganic residue left after the combustion of petroleum products in air at a certain high temperature. Ash content varies between 0,1 and 0,2 percent. The ash content of a fuel is a measure of the amount of inorganic non-combustible material it contains.

Typically, the ash value is higher by weight, although some oils may have a higher ash content. It is in the range of 0.03-0.07 percent. Ash consists of foreign solids, residues of organometallic compounds in solution, and salts dissolved in water in the fuel. These salts can be sodium, vanadium, aluminum, nickel, calcium, magnesium, silicon, iron and similar compounds.

Our organization also provides testing services for ash determination in petroleum products within the scope of ISO 6245 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
