Product Safety Tests

NRTL Standards

Laboratories that comply with NRTL standards provide increased confidence and quality assurance that your products meet North American electrical safety requirements for market acceptance. OSHA standards include requirements for NRTL product testing and certification for 39 product types to be tested and certified by a third-party organization called Nationally Recognized Test Laboratories (NRTL).

NRTL Standards

In 1988, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) created the NRTL program, which defines the set of criteria by which a laboratory can prove worthy of providing assessment, testing and certification of electrical products.

Nationally Recognized Test Laboratories have been recognized by OSHA to meet the legal requirements to perform safety testing and certification of products covered using consensus-based testing standards at 29 CFR 1910.7.

What is NRTL (National Recognized Testing Laboratory)?

The National Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) is an independent third division laboratory recognized by the United States Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) to test and certify products to applicable product safety standards.

OSHA requires that various products, devices, assemblies or systems used in the workplace be tested and certified by a third-party organization called National Recognized Test Laboratories (NRTL). Nationally Recognized Test Laboratories have been recognized by OSHA to meet the legal requirements to perform safety testing and certification of products covered using consensus-based testing standards at 29 CFR 1910.7.

What are NRTL Standards?

OSHA determines which product standards to be used with regard to employee safety. OSHA standards include requirements for NRTL product testing and certification for 39 product types. OSHA requires NRTL approval for many types of electrical equipment when used in the workplace.

Test standards determined to be suitable for use under OSHA's NRTL Program include ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, CSA and UL standards. The need for UL approvals for product safety compliance is actually a common misunderstanding in the industry. While coordinating the UL standard writing, it is just one of several NRTLs for testing and certification.

EUROLAB is the global service leader for product safety approvals and regulatory certification of electrical products - With 60 years of experience to certify your facilities, accreditations, and market your products faster. EUROLAB currently has OSHA approval to test and certify more than 200 product standard categories.

The current standards are explained in the table below.

Programs:
2. Acceptance of test data from independent organizations other than NRTLs.
3. Acceptance of product evaluations from independent organizations other than NRTLs.
4. Acceptance of witness test data.
5. Acceptance of test data from non-independent organizations.
6. Acceptance of evaluation data from non-independent organizations (requires NRTL review prior to marketing).
7. Continuous acceptance of the certificate after minor changes made by the client.
8. Acceptance of product evaluations from organizations acting as part of the International Electrotechnical Commission Certification Body (IEC-CB) Program.
9. Acceptance of services other than testing or evaluation performed by subcontractors or agents.
