European Pressure Equipment Directive PED 2014/68/EU

European Pressure Equipment Directive PED 2014/68/EU

The directive PED 2014/68/EU has been published by the European Parliament and the Council with the aim of harmonizing the laws of the member states on keeping pressure equipment on the market. This directive applies to the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure PS of more than 0,5 bar.

European Pressure Equipment Directive PED 2014/68/EU

However, this directive does not allow any liquid or substance (on land or offshore) to enter or leave a facility. It does not apply to pipelines consisting of pipes or a piping system designed for the transportation of pipes, starting from the last isolation device located within the boundaries of the facility, including all specially designed additional equipment. Related equipment such as networks and pipes for water supply, distribution and discharge, pressure tunnels, pressure shafts for hydroelectric installations and their special accessories are also not covered by this directive. In addition, simple pressure vessels covered by the Directive 2014/29/EU of the European Parliament and the Council, aerosol dispensers covered by the Directive 75/324/EEC and equipment for the operation of vehicles defined by certain legal regulations are also exempt.

For the purposes of this directive,

  • Pressure equipment refers to pressure accessories, including vessels, piping, safety accessories and, where applicable, elements attached to pressure parts such as flanges, nozzles, couplings, supports, lifting lugs.
  • Container refers to an enclosure designed and constructed to contain fluids under pressure, including its direct connections to the port that connects it to other equipment.
  • Piping refers to piping components for the transport of liquids when connected together for integration into a pressure system.
  • Safety accessories refer to devices designed to protect pressure equipment from exceeding permissible limits, including devices for direct pressure limitation such as safety valves, rupture disc safety devices, torsion bars, controlled safety pressure relief systems and limiting devices.
  • Pressure accessories refer to devices with operating function and pressure bearing housings.
