To determine the sealing failure of equipment or material that needs to be sealed, a different test method is required to determine the uniformity of sealing behavior. Detection of the leak in its early stages and then the precise determination of the leak rate is accomplished by conductivity measurements. The effectiveness of a gasket depends on sealing in case of gasket and adhesion in case of compression. There are various types of gaskets, each with different functions, used for sealing purposes. Compression seal, diaphragm seal, ferrofluid seal, flange seal, mechanical seal, Dowty seal (integrated seal, Bridgman seal (piston sealing mechanism), hydrostatic seal, hydrodynamic seal, inflatable seal, radial shaft seal, wiper seal, dry gas seal and Bodok gasket (a special gas-tight gasket for medical applications) are the most commonly used gasket types.

However, other than gaskets, there are other systems that provide sealing. For example, induction seal or lid sealant, adhesive sealant, O-ring, heat seal, hose couplings, hermetic seal and container lid.

The purpose of sealing qualification tests is to determine the effectiveness of sealing components from their internal volumes, ie the insulating strength of internal volumes. Sealing failures either allow the ingress of contaminants, reducing the effective life and reliability of the equipment, or cause the stored liquid or gaseous content to flow out of the container.
