Static Pressure Test

Static Pressure Test

When evaluating a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system and installation conditions, it is important to understand and properly measure static pressure. The results provide clues as to why a system is not working efficiently to get the HVAC units healthy again.

Static Pressure Test

Measuring static pressure is a quick test method. By using static pressure testing appropriately, it is possible to uncover potential problems with such installations. By measuring the static pressure, many broken duct systems are revealed. There maker.

Static pressure is the amount of pressure a fan must blow and pull to move air through a duct system. Static pressure is equal throughout a duct system.

The key to interpreting and detecting static pressure is to first understand how pressures change throughout a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The pressure on the supply side of the ductwork is highest at the discharge of the fan in the equipment. As air enters a room, the lowest pressure on the supply side of the ductwork is usually found beyond the supply register. The pressure on the return side of the ductwork is highest at the inlet of the fan in the equipment. The lowest pressure on the return side of the ductwork is usually found just before the air enters the return grille.

A device called a manometer is usually used to measure pressure. When using static pressure as a detection tool, it's best to look at pressure readings separately. Looking at the individual readings allows to see where the highest resistance is in the duct system. Fans are rated by the maximum total external static pressure they must operate against. If the total external static pressure exceeds the rated pressure, the fan will typically not be able to move the required airflow needed by the system.

One of the first tests in air side diagnostics is to use the total external static pressure measurement. This value is compared with the nominal static pressure of the equipment. If the measured static pressure is higher than the nominal static pressure, the HVAC system is probably not healthy. By looking at individual pressure readings, it appears that the side of the fan with the highest pressure is usually where the restriction is located.
