TS 13433 Glass - Used in Buildings - Practice Rules for Human Impact Safety

The design of this standard was based on the following standard published by the British Standards Institute (BS): BS 6262-4 Glass for buildings - Code of practice for safety related to human impact. This standard is not applicable today, but is still included in the building codes manual. This British standard provides a number of safety considerations for the vertical use of glass and plastic sheet materials. Use is in places where it is likely to be exposed to accidental human influence, especially to reduce the risk of cut and puncture injuries. This standard does not apply to patented glass, non-vertical glass or plastics in furniture and greenhouses.

Windows installed in critical locations in residential buildings must be safe. Conventional flat glass is not considered safety glass. According to the TS 13433 standard, any glass or part of glass in a door that is 1500 mm above the finished floor level is considered to be in a critical position. Any glass or part of that glass that is 300mm from either side of a door edge and 1500mm above finished floor level is also considered to be in a critical position. Likewise, any glass or part of glass in windows, partitions and glass walls at a height of 800 mm above finished floor level is considered to be in a critical position.

The different types of glass classified as safety glass are:

  • Toughened glass (tempered glass) (class A)
  • Laminated glass (class A, B or C)
  • Wired glass (pyroshield security clear/textured) (class C)
  • plastic glass sheet
