Load capacity means the highest demand, load or stress that can be applied to a given system over a long period of time under normal or other conditions. In other words, it expresses the power of a system to continue to fulfill its intended function while supporting a certain amount of weight.
Legal regulations to ensure occupational safety oblige employers to comply with load capacity definitions. For example, the load capacity of a vehicle defines the amount of weight that a vehicle can safely carry, taking into account the increased risk after overloading. The amount of weight a scaffold can safely support, or a crane or forklift can lift, or a vehicle can carry, is related to load capacity. The amount of impact a fall protection system must withstand and the sustained load weight are also related to the load capacity.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established a set of criteria for load capacity. For example, 29 CFR Part 1926 Safety and health standard for construction, to all operators operating powered cranes, requires the provision of information including the load capacity of the crane. For a system to comply with relevant safety requirements, its load capacity must be evaluated in accordance with specific test methods defined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
According to load capacity safety standards, the load capacity of a system must be easily accessible to users and must be visibly hung on or around the system. The load capacity information in elevators is a result of this requirement.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) obliges employers to provide a safe working environment for employees and takes load capacity into account in this context. For example, operating equipment or vehicles whose load capacities are not clearly labeled indicates an unsafe working environment.
