EN IEC 60352 Solderless Connections

The "EN IEC 60352 Solderless connections" standard, which is based on a European standard and subsequently published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), consists of the following subsections published under the same title:

EN IEC 60352 Solderless Connections

  • The standard “EN IEC 60352-1 Part 1: Wrapped connections - General requirements, test methods and practical guide” applies to wrapped connections made with solid round wires of a nominal diameter of at least 0,16 mm and suitably designed poles for use in telecommunications equipment and electronic devices using similar techniques.

In addition to test procedures to ensure electrically stable connections under specified environmental conditions, this standard also incorporates materials information and data from industrial experience. The purpose of this standard is to determine the suitability of wound connections under specified mechanical, electrical, and atmospheric conditions and to provide a means of comparing test results when the tools used to make the connections are of different designs or manufactures.

In brief, this standard covers requirements, tests, and practical guidance. Two test programs are provided. The basic test program applies to wrapped connections that meet all the requirements of Clause 4. These requirements are derived from experience with successful applications of such wrapped connections. The full test program applies to wrapped connections that do not fully meet all the requirements of Clause 4, for example, those manufactured using materials or coatings not included in Clause 4. This approach provides cost- and time-effective performance verification using a limited basic test program for established wrapped connections and an extended full test program for wrapped connections requiring more comprehensive performance verification.

  • The standard “EN IEC 60352-2 Part 2: Crimp connections - General requirements, test methods and practical guide” applies to solderless crimp connections made with the following materials (for use in electrical and electronic equipment):
    • Non-insulated or pre-insulated crimping cylinders, suitable for use as crimping contacts, terminal leads or parts of joints
    • Multi-stranded wires with cross-sections from 0,05 mm2 to 10 mm2
    • Solid wires with diameters from 0,25 mm to 3,6 mm

This standard includes data from industry experience and information on materials, in addition to test procedures to ensure electrically stable connections under specified environmental conditions. This standard is not applicable to the crimping of coaxial cables. This standard determines the suitability of solderless crimp connections, as described above, under specified mechanical, electrical, and atmospheric conditions and provides a means of comparing test results when the tools used to make the connections are of different designs or manufactures.

  • The standard “EN IEC 60352-3 Part 3: Accessible insulation displacement (ID) connections - General requirements, test methods and practical guide” applies to ID connections that are accessible for tests and measurements in accordance with clauses 6 to 8 and are made of:
    • Properly designed accessible ID terminations
    • Wires with solid round conductors with nominal diameters of 0,25 mm to 3,6 mm
    • Wires with stranded conductors with a cross-sectional area of 0,05 mm2 to 10 mm2 for use in electrical and electronic equipment and components.

This standard includes information on materials and data from industry experience, in addition to test procedures to ensure electrically stable connections under specified environmental conditions. Various designs and materials are available for accessible ID terminations. Therefore, only the basic termination parameters are specified, while the performance requirements for the wire and the entire connection are fully specified.

The purpose of this standard is to determine the suitability of accessible ID connections under specified mechanical, electrical, and atmospheric conditions and to provide a means of comparing test results when the tools (if any) used to make the connections are of different designs or manufacture.

  • The standard “EN IEC 60352-4 Part 4: Inaccessible insulation displacement (ID) connections - General requirements, test methods and practical guide” applies to inaccessible ID connections (for use in electrical and electronic equipment and components) for which testing and measurements in accordance with clauses 6 to 8 are appropriate and made of:
    • Properly designed ID terminations
    • Wires with solid round conductors with nominal diameters of 0,25 mm to 3,6 mm
    • Wires with stranded conductors with cross-sectional areas from 0,05 mm2 to 10 mm2

This standard incorporates data from industry experience and information on materials, in addition to test procedures to ensure electrically stable connections under specified environmental conditions. A variety of designs and materials are available for ID terminations. Therefore, only the basic termination parameters are specified, while the performance requirements for the wire and the entire connection are detailed.

The purpose of this standard is to determine the suitability of inaccessible ID connections under specified mechanical, electrical, and atmospheric conditions and to provide a means of comparing test results when the tools (if any) used to make the connections are of different designs or manufacture.

  • The standard "EN IEC 60352-5 Part 5: Press-fit connections - General requirements, test methods and practical guide" applies to solderless press-fit connections used in telecommunications equipment and electronic devices using similar techniques. A press-fit connection consists of a termination element with a suitable press-fit zone that is inserted into the plated through hole of a double-sided or multi-layer printed circuit board.

In addition to test procedures to ensure electrically stable connections under specified environmental conditions, materials information and data from industrial experience are included. The purpose of this standard is to determine the suitability of crimp connections under specified mechanical, electrical, and atmospheric conditions. Only compliant crimp zones can be qualified according to this specification. Solid crimp zones are used.

  • “EN IEC 60352-6 Part 6: Insulation-piercing connections - General requirements, test methods and practical guide" applies to insulation-piercing connections made with stranded and silvered wires, insulated flat conductors, and flat flexible circuits for use in electrical and electronic equipment. In addition to test procedures to ensure electrically stable connections under specified environmental conditions, information on materials and data from industrial experience are also included.

The purposes of this standard are to:

    • To determine the suitability of insulation penetration joints under specified mechanical, electrical and atmospheric conditions.
    • To provide the possibility of comparing test results when the tools used to make the connections (if any) are of different design or manufacture.

There are different designs and materials for insulation piercing terminations in use. Therefore, this standard specifies only the basic parameters of the termination, the performance requirements of the conductor, and the entire connection.

  • The standard “EN IEC 60352-7 Part 7: Spring clamp connections - General requirements, test methods and practical guide” applies to spring clamp connections made with stripped wire without further preparation (for use in electrical and electronic equipment and components according to standards IEC 60228 or IEC 60189-3):

  • The standard "EN IEC 60352-9 Part 9: Ultrasonic welded joints - General requirements, test methods and practical guidance" provides guidelines for welding and testing ultrasonic welded joints and includes information on requirements, tests, and practical guidance. Ultrasonic welding is a type of cold friction welding that is becoming increasingly popular in many industries. This type of welding uses ultrasonic vibration to join materials, creating a bond that is both strong and reliable.

Ultrasonic welding is defined as a process by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in its ISO 4063-41 standard. Ultrasonic welding relies on the use of high-frequency ultrasound waves to create frictional heat at the joint. This specialized welding method does not require high temperatures, making it one of the most cost-effective ways to join two materials. It is also faster than traditional methods and can be completed with minimal welding effort.

Ultrasonic welding can be used on a variety of materials, including plastics, rubbers, metals, textiles, and composites. Its precision and the strong bonds it creates have made it extremely popular in manufacturing processes such as the automotive industry, electronics, furniture manufacturing, and even medical device manufacturing.

This standard covers ultrasonic welded connections made with stranded or flexible wires (Class 2, Class 5 or Class 6 according to IEC 60228) made of copper or copper alloy, as well as aluminium or aluminium alloy.
