EN IEC 62275 Cable Management Systems - Cable Ties for Electrical Installations

EN IEC 62275 Cable Management Systems - Cable Ties for Electrical Installations

The standard "EN IEC 62275 Cable management systems - Cable ties for electrical installations," based on a European standard and subsequently published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), specifies the requirements for metallic, non-metallic, and composite cable ties and their associated fastening devices used to manage or secure wiring systems in electrical installations. The cable ties and their associated fastening devices may also be suitable for other applications, such as supporting wiring systems, and additional requirements may apply when used in this manner.

EN IEC 62275 Cable Management Systems - Cable Ties for Electrical Installations

This standard does not include requirements for evaluating the electrical insulation properties of cable ties or the mechanical protection of cables provided by cable ties. This standard includes requirements for the mechanical interface of an adhesive fastening device to a solid surface. It does not address the mechanical behavior of the solid surface itself. This standard does not address the mechanical interface of a non-adhesive fastening device to a solid surface, such as a mounting screw.

The latest update of this standard is a technical revision and includes the following significant technical changes compared to the previous edition:

  • Evaluation of adhesive fixation devices
  • Revised and updated normative references
  • Amended definitions for metallic and composite cable ties
  • New definitions
  • Improving testing procedures
  • New figures for typical test setup arrangement for fixation devices and integrated fixation devices.

A cable tie and fixing device shall withstand the stresses likely to occur during the recommended installation application and shall perform under the conditions of the classifications in this standard as declared by the manufacturer. Compliance is checked by carrying out all appropriate specified tests. The annex to the standard details the compliance checks to be carried out for cable ties and fixing devices currently compliant with this standard to ensure compliance with this standard (Annex A).

Tests performed in accordance with this standard are type tests. Unless otherwise specified, tests are performed with cable ties and associated fastening devices, if present, installed as they would be in normal use, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Unless otherwise specified, the requirements and tests for fastening devices also apply to adhesive fastening devices.

For guidance in determining product types and sample sets, a family of cable ties or fastening devices with common materials, construction characteristics, and classifications is considered the same product type according to this standard. Samples to be considered are those of the same general material description, material colors, or varying lengths of a cable tie of otherwise similar construction. The sample sets selected for testing from each product type represent the extremes of the range (e.g., shortest and longest), and the minimum performance level achieved for each extreme is considered representative of the entire range. When determining product types, minor differences in construction that can be determined by inspection and have no impact on performance are considered.

Unless otherwise specified, testing on nonmetallic and composite components should begin after the samples have been removed from their packaging and subsequently stabilized at 23°C plus/minus 5°C and 50% plus/minus 5% relative humidity for the time specified in the table. This stabilization is intended to achieve equilibrium moisture content for all samples before and after further conditioning and testing.

The reference thickness of a cable tie is measured at the midpoint of the strap. The reference thickness of a fastening element shall be the smallest cross-section in the area in contact with the cable tie or the thickness declared by the manufacturer.

Unless otherwise stated, tests are performed at an ambient temperature of 23 degrees plus/minus 5 degrees and a relative humidity of 40 percent to 60 percent.

Unless otherwise specified, three new samples are submitted for testing and all tests are met. If only one sample fails due to an assembly or manufacturing error, that test and any previous tests that may have affected the test results are repeated. Subsequent tests are performed in the required order on another complete set of samples that all meet the requirements. The applicant may also submit an additional set of samples, as may be required if a sample fails, when submitting the first set of samples. The testing station will then test the additional set of samples without further request and will only reject it if another failure occurs. If the additional set of samples is not submitted simultaneously, the failure of a sample will warrant rejection.

In short, EN IEC 62275 is a critical guide for professionals in the electrical and construction industries. It specifies the requirements for cable ties and associated fastening devices used to manage and secure wiring systems in electrical installations. This standard focuses on metallic, non-metallic, and composite cable ties and associated fastening devices used to organize and secure wiring systems in electrical installations up to 1000 Volts AC or 1500 Volts DC. These components are essential for providing organized and secure wiring in a variety of environments, including commercial buildings, industrial facilities, telecommunications networks, and transportation systems. This standard also recognizes that cable ties and fastening devices can be used in non-electrical applications, such as supporting wiring systems, where additional requirements may apply. In particular, it does not cover the electrical insulation properties of cable ties or the mechanical protection of cables provided by these ties.

The EN IEC 62275 standard covers detailed technical specifications to ensure the reliability, durability, and safety of cable ties and fastening devices. The essential requirements are:

  • Material properties: Identifies suitable materials (metallic, non-metallic, and composite) to provide durability and resistance to environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and UV exposure.
  • Design and dimensions: Provides guidelines on the design and sizing of cable ties to ensure compatibility with various cable types and installation needs.
  • Mechanical properties: Specifies tensile strength, vibration resistance (IEC 60068-2-6 standard) and thermal endurance (IEC 60216-4-1 standard) tests to ensure that cable ties can withstand mechanical and environmental stresses.
  • Fire hazard testing: Includes fire contribution tests, including the needle flame test method (IEC 60695-11-5 standard), to minimize fire risks.
  • Corrosion and UV resistance: Includes corrosion (IEC 60068-2-52 standard for salt fog) and UV resistance tests to ensure long-term performance in harsh environments.

The EN IEC 62275 standard is applicable in a wide range of industries and environments, including:

  • Commercial and residential buildings: Provides safe and efficient cable management in electrical installations.
  • Industrial facilities: Supports robust cable management in factories and facilities where reliability is critical.
  • Telecommunications: Manages cables in data centers and communication networks for optimal performance.
  • Transportation: Used for secure cable organization in the automotive, aviation and railway industries.

The flexibility of this standard allows it to be adapted to non-electrical applications such as supporting wiring systems, provided additional requirements are met.

Consequently, the EN IEC 62275 standard is a fundamental tool for ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of cable management systems in electrical installations. Its comprehensive requirements, up-to-date testing methodologies, and broad applicability make it a fundamental element for professionals across many industries. By adhering to this standard, it is possible to meet international best practices and increase the safety and longevity of electrical systems.
