UL 758 Appliance Wiring Material

UL 758 Appliance Wiring Material

The “UL 758 Appliance wiring material” standard, developed by Underwriter Laboratories (UL), describes requirements for appliance wiring material in the form of single insulated conductors, multi-conductor cables, optical fibers, individually insulated conductors, and fiber optic elements for use as components in multi-conductor cables.

UL 758 Appliance Wiring Material

Appliance wiring material covered by the requirements of this standard is used only as factory-assembled wiring for further processing within the overall enclosure of appliances and other equipment (internal wiring) or as external interconnection wiring for appliances (external wiring) or as components in multi-conductor cables.

These requirements do not currently cover any type of wire, cable or cord in the “NFPA 70-2020 National Electrical Code” standard and are not intended for installation in buildings or structures in accordance with the National Electrical Code, outside the scope of the installation instructions for the final product suitable for its intended use.

These requirements cover appliance wiring materials having operating temperatures of a minimum dry heat rating of 60 degrees and voltage ratings of a minimum of 30 volts. Appliance wiring materials consisting entirely of optical fiber members or optical fiber members with electrical conductors are also covered by these requirements.

These requirements do not cover the optical performance of any individual optical fiber member or group of such members.

In addition to these structures, this standard establishes guidelines for evaluating special structures that, due to specific end product uses, do not necessarily meet all the requirements for general structure device wiring material.

Final acceptance of the device wiring material is dependent on its use in complete equipment conforming to the standards applicable to such equipment.

The components of an appliance wiring material within the scope of this standard shall comply with the requirements for that component. A component does not need to comply with a particular requirement if:

  • If the product within the scope of this standard contains a feature or characteristic that is not required for the application of the component
  • If overridden by a requirement in this standard

A component must be used in accordance with its rating for the intended use conditions. Certain components are deficient in structural features or limited in their performance capabilities. Such components are designed for use only under limited conditions, such as specific temperatures that do not exceed specified limits, and must be used only under those specific conditions.

Polymeric materials evaluated for their intended use are not prohibited from being used in the insulation and jacket applications specified in the table provided in the standard.

The acceptability of an appliance wiring material for use in a particular end product depends on the construction and flame rating of each structure. The following tables throughout the standard contain requirements for construction details and basic test methods for typical appliance wiring material structures:

  • Extruded insulated single or multiple conductor board
  • Table of single conductor with non-extruded insulation
  • Table of parallel cables with extruded integral insulation and jacket
  • Table of multi-conductor cables using non-integrated jackets
  • Glued or laminated flat ribbon cable table
  • Extruded insulated high voltage DC wire table
  • Table of optional tests and ratings

Any material used in the appliance wiring material must be compatible with all other materials used in the wire or cable. Due to possible incompatibility, styrene type TPE materials may not be suitable for use in cords where direct contact with PVC may occur. A separator is an acceptable means of avoiding direct contact. Other, if any, material combinations that may be incompatible have not yet been identified.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, it also provides testing services defined in the "UL 758 Device wiring material" standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
