DIN 1946 Thermal Performance of Building Products and Components - Specific Criteria for the Evaluation of Laboratories Measuring Heat Transfer Characteristics
The standard “DIN 1946 Thermal performance of building products and components - Specific criteria for the evaluation of laboratories measuring heat transfer properties” developed by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) consists of a number of sections published under the same title. Namely,

- The standard "DIN 1946-1 Part 1: Common criteria" describes specific technical criteria for the assessment of laboratories that perform heat transfer property measurements of construction products and components according to standard test methods, within the framework of the general criteria given in the standards "EN 45001 Occupational health and safety management systems - Requirements with instructions for use" and "EN 45002 General criteria for the assessment of testing laboratories". This standard applies to both internally conducted assessments and assessments formally carried out by an accreditation body and is intended to assist all interested parties.
This standard includes the content of the documents required by the EN 45001 standard (equipment manual, calibration and maintenance files, measurement procedure document) and procedures for the assessment of equipment accuracy and performance control. All other requirements for laboratories performing heat transfer property measurements are given in the EN 45000 series of standards.
The DIN 1946-1 standard gives the assessment requirements common to the various test methods, the following sections give the assessment requirements relevant to each test method. The application of this standard assumes a sufficient level of competence for the personnel involved.
- The standard "DIN 1946-2 Part 2: Measurements by the protected hot plate method" describes specific technical criteria for the assessment of laboratories that will perform steady-state heat transfer property measurements by the protected hot plate method in accordance with the standards prEN12667 and prEN12664. This standard complements the common criteria defined in the DIN 1946-1 standard and provides guidance on the organization and content of the equipment manual, calibration and maintenance files and the measurement procedure document.
- The standard “DIN 1946-3 Part 3: Measurements by the heat flow meter method” specifies specific technical criteria for the assessment of laboratories for steady-state heat transfer property measurements by the heat flow meter method in accordance with the standards “EN 12667 Thermal performance of construction materials and products - Determination of thermal resistance by the protected hot plate and heat flow meter methods - Products with high and medium thermal resistance” and “EN 12664 Thermal performance of construction materials and products - Determination of thermal resistance by the protected hot plate and heat flow meter methods - Dry and moist products with medium and low thermal resistance”. This standard complements the common criteria defined in DIN 1946-1. It also provides guidance on the organization and content of the equipment manual, calibration and maintenance files and the measurement procedure document.
- The standard “DIN 1946-4 Part 4: Measurements by hot box methods” describes specific technical criteria for the assessment of laboratories that will perform steady-state heat transfer property measurements on products and components using calibrated or shielded hot box apparatus in accordance with EN ISO 8990. This includes application to doors and windows in accordance with EN ISO 12567 or using a heat flux meter in a hot box apparatus in accordance with EN 1934. This standard complements the common criteria defined in DIN 1946-1. It also provides guidance on the organization and content of the equipment manual, calibration and maintenance files and measurement procedure document. It provides information on mandatory equipment performance characteristics and equipment description. It also supplements error analysis and calculations for equipment design not provided for in EN ISO 8990, EN 1934 and related standards. It provides information on appropriate experimental procedures for the assessment of instrument accuracy.
- "DIN-1946 5 Part 5: Measurements by pipe test methods,” describes specific technical criteria for the evaluation of laboratories for steady-state heat transfer characteristic measurements on circular pipe insulation. This standard provides guidance on the organization and content of the equipment manual, calibration and maintenance files, and measurement procedure document. It provides information on the calculations for equipment design and error analysis on the mandatory equipment itself and on circular pipe apparatus and shielded hot plate apparatus. It provides information on appropriate experimental procedures for the evaluation of instrument accuracy.
- The standard "DIN 1946-6 Part 6: Ventilation of dwellings - General requirements, requirements for design, construction, commissioning and delivery and maintenance" applies to natural and fan-assisted ventilation of dwellings and similar units primarily used for residential purposes, including residential buildings, retirement homes and nursing homes and similar facilities, during the heating season and throughout the year in basements. The ventilation concept in DIN 1946-4 and DIN 1946-5 applies to new buildings and to existing buildings with ventilation-related modifications. If ventilation for moisture protection cannot be provided or if additional requirements (e.g. sound insulation, hygiene, air quality) have to be taken into account, suitable ventilation measures in accordance with other parts of this standard are recommended.
Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also test services in accordance with the standard "DIN 1946 Thermal performance of building products and components - Specific criteria for the evaluation of laboratories measuring heat transfer properties".
