DoE Battery Charger Test

DoE Battery Charger Test

The DoE battery charger test ensures that the mandatory DoE regulations for your battery charger systems are complied with.

DoE Battery Charger Test

It helps ensure that your battery charger systems comply with Department of Energy (DoE) regulations that are mandatory to be sold or distributed in the USA.
Battery chargers are used by any residential or commercial device powered by batteries. As defined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), “battery charger” means a device that charges batteries for consumer products, including battery chargers built into other consumer products. Examples of devices that use battery chargers are mobile phones, laptops, two-way radios, emergency back-up lighting.

Since battery chargers currently operate in three modes (Battery Free, Maintenance and Active), it is important that the battery chargers are efficient in all three operating modes to save energy during actual use. The time spent in each mode varies significantly between products, and therefore studies have shown that products are generally inefficient in any or all of the three modes of operation.

The Department of Energy (DoE) has set 10 CFR 429 regulations on certification, compliance and enforcement in the CFR to ensure that all products manufactured or imported into the US are designed to operate efficiently and consume less energy. If you manufacture or sell battery chargers or products with a built-in battery charging system, your products to be sold or distributed in the US must comply with DoE's Energy Saving Standards. Failure to comply with the new law will result in products that cannot be legally sold in the US.

EUROLABis a leader in energy efficiency testing and certification and is experienced in helping major manufacturers meet the requirements of global energy efficiency programs. We can help battery charger manufacturers and distributors understand complex DOE regulations, perform required testing, and ensure compliance with mandatory testing method.

EUROLAB can also test and certify energy efficiency requirements for EPA's ENERGY STAR® program, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), California Energy Commission (CEC), EU CE Mark, and Department of Energy (DOE).

As defined in Federal Regulations 10 CFR 430.2, "battery charger" means a device that charges batteries for consumer products. Battery Chargers manufactured and distributed for commercial purposes must meet the energy saving standards set forth in the Federal Regulations Act 42 CFR 6291 (z), defined by 16 USC 10 (430.32). Any indication of the energy consumption of battery chargers must be based on the test procedure methods set out in 10 CFR 430, Subpart B, Annex Y.

Battery chargers can be standalone equipment or embedded in other products. Battery chargers operate in three modes: Without Battery, Maintenance and Active.

  • In battery-free mode, the charger is plugged in but not connected to a battery.
  • In maintenance mode, the charger is inserted and connected to the fully charged battery.
  • In active mode, the charger is charged and attached to the battery.
  • To save energy during actual use, it is important that battery chargers are efficient in all three operating modes, as the time spent in each mode varies significantly between products and between users of a particular product.
  • The Department of Energy (DoE) uses a unique method to calculate UEC - Unit Energy Consumption, which is a measure of the energy consumed in all 3 operating modes of a battery charging system.

EUROLAB, with its highly expert team and internationally accredited laboratories, DoE Battery Charger Test It performs all test, analysis, measurement, evaluation and report generation services completely and reliably.
