EN 16147 Electrically Driven Compressor Heat Pumps - Testing, Performance Rating and Requirements for Marking of Domestic Hot Water Units

EN 16147 Electrically Driven Compressor Heat Pumps - Testing, Performance Rating and Requirements for Marking of Domestic Hot Water Units

The European standard "EN 16147 Electrically driven compressor heat pumps - Testing, performance rating and requirements for the marking of domestic hot water units" describes the requirements and test methods for testing, performance assessment and calculation of water heating energy efficiency of air/water, brine/water, water/water and direct exchange/water heat pump water heaters and heat pump combination heaters with electrically driven compressors and connected to or incorporating a domestic hot water storage tank for domestic hot water production. This standard only includes the test procedure for domestic hot water production of the heat pump system.

EN 16147 Electrically Driven Compressor Heat Pumps - Testing, Performance Rating and Requirements for Marking of Domestic Hot Water Units

Test procedures for simultaneous operation of domestic hot water production and space heating are outside the scope of this standard. Simultaneous means that domestic hot water production and space heating production occur simultaneously and can interact. The seasonal efficiency of space heating for heat pump combination heaters is determined according to the standard “DIN EN 14825 Air conditioners, liquid cooling packages and heat pumps with electrically driven compressors for space heating and cooling - Testing and rating under part load conditions and calculation of seasonal performance”.

This European standard applies only to water heaters supplied as a heat pump and storage tank package. In the case of water heaters consisting of several components with refrigerant connections, this standard applies only to those designed and supplied as a complete package. On the other hand, this standard does not specify requirements for the quality of the water used.

For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply in addition to the terms and definitions given in EN 14511-1:

  • Heat pump water heater refers to a water heater that uses ambient heat and/or waste heat from air source, water source or underground source to generate heat.
  • A heat pump combination heater is a heat pump space heater designed to provide heat to provide hot drinking or sanitary water at specified temperature levels, quantities and flow rates at specified intervals and connected to an external drinking or sanitary water source.
  • Domestic hot water refers to water heated for domestic or similar purposes.
  • Storage volume is the measured volume of the tank.
  • Unheated space air is the heat source for a heat pump, which absorbs heat by an air heat exchanger in direct contact with the air in an unheated space in a building.
  • Indoor air is the heat source for a heat pump, which absorbs heat by an air heat exchanger that is in direct contact with the air in a heated space in a building.
  • The coefficient of performance for domestic hot water is the coefficient of performance determined using the reference load profile and includes the heat losses of the storage tank.
  • The reference hot water temperature is the average temperature value of the average temperatures during a single draw, which ends when the hot water temperature drops below 40 degrees.

The test apparatus shall be designed so that all requirements for setting values, stability criteria and measurement uncertainties in accordance with this standard can be met. Water systems or other heat transfer fluid systems shall be sufficiently free of entrained gas to ensure that the measured results are not significantly affected.

The inlet and outlet temperatures of domestic water are measured at the centre of the flow and as close as possible to the device. The response time and sampling interval of the temperature sensor should be selected to maintain the uncertainties in the table given in the standard.

Ducted air systems must be sufficiently airtight to ensure that measured results are not significantly affected by air exchange with the surroundings. Measurement uncertainties must not exceed the values specified in the table.

The size of the test room for the external heat exchanger of air source heat pumps should be selected so that there is no resistance to air flow at the air inlet and air outlet holes of the test object. The air flow in the room cannot initiate any short circuit between the two holes, and therefore the air flow velocity at these two locations when the test object is closed should not exceed 1,5 m/s.

Unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer, the air inlet and air outlet openings must not be less than 1 m from the test chamber surfaces. This also applies to all measurement channels.

Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also test services in accordance with the standard “EN 16147 Electrically operated compressor heat pumps - Testing, performance rating and requirements for the marking of domestic hot water units”.
