VW TL 52577 SAE 0W-20 Factory Fill Engine Oil, Reduced Ash Content and Specific Fuel Economy Properties - Requirements, Testing

The standard “VW TL 52577 SAE 0W-20 Factory-fill engine oil, reduced ash content and special fuel-saving properties - Requirements, testing” developed by the Volkswagen automobile company describes the requirements for factory-fill engine oil with reduced ash content, special fuel-saving properties and reduced high-temperature high-shear viscosity for use in Volkswagen Group gasoline engines (direct and indirect injection) and diesel engines (direct injection) approved for this purpose, including all diesel engines with diesel particulate filters.

VW TL 52577 SAE 0W-20 Factory Fill Engine Oil, Reduced Ash Content and Specific Fuel Economy Properties - Requirements, Testing

The engine oils according to this technical supply specification are factory-filled engine oils with reduced ash content. This standard meets the requirements for the required service life of exhaust after-treatment systems, in particular systems with diesel particulate filters without the aid of regeneration by fuel additives, and for achieving long oil change intervals when used in the above-mentioned Volkswagen Group engines. Due to their reduced high-temperature high-cutoff viscosity, they have outstanding fuel-saving properties and are distinguished by high thermal resistance, reduced power levels required to pump them and optimised soot capacities. Due to their reduced high-temperature high-cutoff viscosity, the engine oils described here are not backward compatible and may only be used in specifically approved engines (not universal engine oils).

To distinguish them from other engine oils used by the Volkswagen Group, the engine oils described in this standard are colour-coded and have a chemical marker that is stable throughout their service life. Engine oils in this standard are suitable as all-season oils, provided that the oil change intervals specified in the user manuals are observed.

The requirements in this standard are specified as follows:

  • According to this standard, engine oils meet all the requirements of VW 50800 and VW 50900 standards.
  • All requirements defined in this standard must be documented in a test report specifying the oil code.
  • According to Volkswagen test specifications, all tests must be carried out at independent test institutes within the European Union approved by Volkswagen.
  • According to this standard, engine oils are subject to sample approval. In order to be granted sample approval, evidence must be provided that the engine oils have undergone additional tests beyond those described in this standard. The Volkswagen Group reserves the right to define the scope of these sample examinations for each applicant individually.
  • If the formula of the oil is changed, this will invalidate any release for this engine oil issued by the Group. This includes the modification or replacement of base oil components and viscosity index improvers as well as additive systems and components.
  • According to the TL 52577 standard, engine oils must be mixable and compatible with all other factory-filled engine oils and commercially available engine oils in any ratio.
  • After 36 months from the original release, new tests must confirm that the engine oil is still suitable for release. The requirements of the standard in force at the time must be met and the fulfillment must once again be documented.
  • Initial supply and approval of changes must comply with the VW 01155 standard.
  • Avoidance of hazardous substances must comply with the VW 91101 standard.
  • For an evaluation by Volkswagen, the manufacturer must provide 30 litres of the oil in question upon request.
  • The shelf life should be at least 20 months in its unopened original packaging between minus 50 degrees and plus 36 degrees.

The launch of this factory-filled engine oil requires sample approval, which requires the successful completion of several production sample audits on all engines that will be released for this engine oil.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses and evaluation studies that our organization has carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services defined in the “VW TL 52577 SAE 0W-20 Factory fill engine oil, reduced ash content and special fuel economy properties - Requirements, testing” standard with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
