Nitrofuran Analysis

Nitrofuran Analysis

Nitrofurans are a group of drugs that are generally used as antibiotics or antimicrobials. The defining structural component of this group is a furan ring with a nitro group.

Nitrofuran Analysis

The use of nitrofurans in the European Union countries was banned in 1995 due to concerns that the residues in edible tissues of nitrofuran antibiotics used for the treatment of bacterial diseases in livestock production are carcinogenic. Before this ban, nitrofuran drugs were widely used as an effective veterinary antibiotic, especially in pig farming.

Nitrofurans are synthetic agents with a broad antimicrobial spectrum. They are active against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Nitrofurans suppress a number of microbial enzyme systems, including those involved in carbohydrate metabolism. However, the main mechanisms of action have not yet been fully clarified. Its primary effects are bacteriostatic, but at high doses it is also bactericidal. They are much more active in acidic environments. Nitrofurans show complete cross-resistance among themselves, but no cross-resistance with other antibacterial agents.

They are used topically (by applying on the skin) as they are very slightly water soluble. No nitrofuran is systemically effective. Some nitrofurans are carcinogenic and their use is questionable.

In order to control the illegal use of nitrofuran antibiotics, which are banned for use in livestock production due to fears of carcinogenic effects on humans, residue levels in tissues have been started to be measured. Highly sensitive and specific analytical methods are used for the determination of nitrofuran residues.

The development of sensitive methods and monitoring strategies for nitrofuran metabolites still continues today. In addition, within the framework of these studies, immunological tests have been developed that provide simple alternative screening methods and can detect nitrofuran metabolites, especially for suitable use in the food industry.

In short, nitrofurans belong to a class of synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotics. Nitrofurans have been widely used as feed additives for growth promotion and have been primarily used in the treatment of bacterial infections in farm animals, namely poultry, pigs and cattle, aquaculture, namely fish and shrimp, and bee colonies.

Our organization also provides nitrofuran analysis services with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
