EN IEC 60598-2-1 Lighting Luminaires - Part 2-1: Specific Requirements - Fixed General Purpose Lighting Luminaires
The standard “EN IEC 60598-2-1 Lighting luminaires - Part 2-1: Specific requirements - Fixed general purpose luminaires”, which has its origins in a European standard and was later published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), describes the requirements for fixed general purpose luminaires for use with electric light sources at supply voltages not exceeding 1000 Volts.

The EN IEC 60598-2-1 standard replaced the EN 60598-2-1 standard. This mandatory safety requirement affected all fixed general purpose luminaires used with electric light sources at voltages not exceeding 1000 Volts.
This definitive safety standard for lighting fixtures contains the essential electrical safety and performance requirements for all fixed electric lighting fixtures in terms of design, construction, testing and overall performance. This standard contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goal of making cities and communities safe and resilient, particularly in terms of lighting fixture safety.
Key changes to understand in this new version of the standard include:
- Updated markup requirements
- New and updated structural requirements for manufacturing companies
- New electric and magnetic field (EMF) requirements
- New blue light hazard assessment
- New requirements for power over Ethernet (PoE) systems
- New and updated test procedures for direct current (DC) electrical power testing, leakage current testing, gland torque testing, and rolling testing
In fact, the purpose of the test method described in this standard is to determine the actual service life of the luminaire as a whole, not just the fixed general purpose luminaire components. Such tests simulate the aging process caused by a number of factors, such as exposure of the components to sunlight during use. Light aging tests can simulate the effects of aging over days and months in natural environments in a very short time.
In general, the EN IEC 60598 standard classifies fixed general purpose lighting luminaires into three groups:
- Class I luminaires provide protection against electric shock that does not rely solely on the basic insulation. These luminaires include an additional safety measure. This measure is provided by the connection of accessible conductive parts. This connection is made to the protective (earthing) conductor in the fixed wiring of the installation. This is completed in such a way that in the event of failure of the basic insulation, accessible conductive parts cannot become live.
- Class II luminaires offer protection against electric shock that does not rely solely on basic insulation. However, in this class of luminaire, additional safety measures include double insulation or reinforced insulation. There is no provision for protective earthing or reliance on installation conditions. Examples of these luminaires include equipment that has a durable and substantially continuous enclosure of insulating material. This enclosure encloses all metal parts except minor parts such as nameplates, screws, and rivets. These are usually insulated from live parts by insulation at least equivalent to reinforced insulation. Such luminaires are called insulation-encased class II luminaires. Another example of such luminaires is a luminaire that has a substantially continuous metal enclosure. This enclosure is insulated from live parts by insulation at least equivalent to double or reinforced insulation. Such a luminaire is called a metal-encased class II luminaire.
- Class III luminaires provide protection against electric shock by relying on a safety extra-low voltage supply. These luminaires do not produce voltages greater than the SELV level. The SELV level is an electrical system in which the voltage does not exceed extra-low voltage under normal and single-fault conditions, including ground faults in other circuits.
