UL 1598 Lighting Fixtures

UL 1598 Lighting Fixtures

The "UL 1598 Lighting Fixtures" standard, developed by Underwriter Laboratories (UL), specifies requirements for luminaires designed to be installed in branch circuits rated at 22.1 V or less between conductors in accordance with the Canadian electrical code CSA C70, the US national electrical code ANSI/NFPA 001, and the Mexican national electrical code NOM-600-SEDE. However, luminaires covered by other standards are not covered by this standard.

UL 1598 Lighting Fixtures

Luminaires outside the scope of this standard include:

  • Amateur film lamps
  • Aquarium lamps
  • Cabinet lights
  • Decorative lighting arrays
  • Combined fan/IR lamps used for heating
  • Electric signs
  • Exit signs
  • Junction boxes for swimming pool fittings
  • Lamp adapters
  • Low-level road marking and lighting systems in the United States

Low voltage landscape lighting includes:

  • For products intended for installation in Canada, landscape lighting systems rated at 30 Volts nominal or less
  • For products intended for installation in Mexico, low voltage landscape lighting devices rated at 24 Volts nominal or less
  • Low voltage landscape lighting devices rated at 15 Volts nominal or less for products intended for installation in the United States
  • Low voltage lighting fixtures for use in recreational vehicles
  • Low voltage marine lighting
  • Luminaires for hazardous locations
  • Recreational vehicle fixtures in the USA
  • Marine navigation lights
  • Marine type fittings
  • Portable electric screens
  • Portable hand lamps
  • Portable luminaires
  • Portable solar and heat lamps
  • Self-ballasted lamps and lamp adapters
  • Stage and studio fixtures
  • Underwater fittings
  • Swimming pool fittings
  • Temporary lighting arrays
  • Therapeutic lamps
  • Rail lighting systems
  • Under cabinet lights in Canada and hardwired under cabinet lights in the United States
  • Unit equipment for emergency lighting

The requirements applicable to the integral light emitting diode (LED) components and subassemblies of a luminaire covered by this standard are contained in “UL 8750 Standard for Light emitting diode (LED) equipment for use in lighting products” and “CSA C22.2 General requirements - Canadian electrical code, Part II”.

In short, the UL 1598 standard describes three wet-condition tests that can be applied to a luminaire depending on its use and installation location: rain, sprinkler, and submersion. A particular luminaire may be subjected to one or more tests to determine whether it can be classified as a wet-condition luminaire. All tests attempt to simulate the potential conditions the luminaire might be exposed to in the environment where it is intended to be used. For example, a test applied to a luminaire used in ceilings protected from external moisture aims to determine whether moisture ingress from above is prevented. For this purpose, the luminaire is tested using a sprinkler test. This test is rigorous and is performed with a controlled spray nozzle directed at the luminaire, set to 20 psi.

The test is performed over four hours and is sequenced as follows:

  • First hour, the faucet is turned on and the water jet is off
  • For the next half hour, the faucet is turned off and the water jet is on.
  • For the next two hours, the faucet is turned on and the water jet is on
  • For the next half hour, the faucet is turned off and the water jet is on.

Once testing is complete, the fixture is subjected to a dielectric voltage withstand test and fully inspected to ensure there is no water ingress that could create a hazard or cause the fixture to fail.

Our organization has a strong staff that closely follows the developments in the world in the field of science and technology and constantly improves itself. Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies provided for businesses in various sectors, there are also test services in accordance with the "UL 1598 Lighting Fixtures" standard.
