ASTM D1193 Standard Specification for Reactive Water
The "ASTM D1193 Standard Specification for Reactive Water" standard, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), describes the properties that water deemed suitable for use in accordance with the standards within the ASTM jurisdiction should have.

Four types of water have been identified, and three additional classes can be applied to these four types. The class specifications specifically address contaminants of microbiological origin. When reagent water is required as a component of an analytical measurement process, it is expected that all applicable ASTM standards will reference one or more of these reagent water types.
While these water types and associated classes are specifically defined for use by ASTM standards, they may also be suitable for other applications. Users of this specification are responsible for ensuring that the selected water types or qualities are suitable for their intended uses. Historically, Types I, II, III, and IV have been associated with specific processes for the production of reagent waters. These types of water can be produced by alternative technologies, provided that the appropriate component specifications are met and the produced water is shown to be suitable for the application for which the water is intended. Therefore, the selection of an alternative technology over the technology specified in the table provided in the standard should be made with due consideration of the potential impact of other contaminants, such as microorganisms and pyrogens. Such contaminants are not necessarily considered by the performance characteristics of the previously mentioned technology.
The classification is as follows:
- Type I reagent water must be prepared by distillation or other equivalent process, followed by polishing with a mixed bed of ion exchange materials and a 0,2 µm membrane filter. The feed water to the final polishing step must have a maximum conductivity of 20 µS/cm at 25°C. Type I reagent water may be produced by alternative technologies as long as the appropriate component specifications are met and the produced water can be shown to be suitable for the application for which the water is used.
- Type II reagent water is prepared by distillation using a distillation apparatus designed to produce a distillate with a conductivity of less than 1,0 µS/cm at 25°C. If purity cannot be achieved by single distillation, ion exchange, distillation, or reverse osmosis and organic adsorption may be required prior to distillation. Type II reagent water may be produced by alternative technologies as long as the appropriate component specifications are met and the produced water is shown to be suitable for the application for which the water is intended.
- Type III reagent water must be prepared by distillation, ion exchange, continuous electrodeionization, reverse osmosis, or a combination thereof, followed by polishing through a 0,45 µm membrane filter. Type III reagent water may be produced by alternative technologies as long as appropriate component specifications are met and the produced water is shown to be suitable for the application for which the water is intended.
- Type IV reagent water may be prepared by distillation, ion exchange, continuous electrodeionization, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, or a combination thereof. Type IV reagent water may be produced by alternative technologies as long as appropriate component specifications are met and the produced water is shown to be suitable for the application for which the water is intended.
Guidance for the application, preparation, use and monitoring of specified waters, storage, handling, distribution, testing and validation of the water treatment system is included in the annex to this standard (Annex X1).
If appropriate component specifications are met, it may be possible to produce this type of water using alternative technologies. Electrical conductivity and resistivity, pH, silica, sodium, chlorides, TOC (total organic carbon), endotoxins, and microbiological contamination are tested to meet the specified requirements.
The ASTM D1193 standard is essential because it establishes clear, consistent, and reliable standards for the purity and classification of water used in scientific and industrial settings. The key reasons for this standard's importance include:
- Ensures consistency and reproducibility: In laboratory tests and analytical procedures, water quality can significantly impact results. This standard defines specific water types (I through IV) that include quantitative limits for contaminants such as organic carbon, conductivity and resistivity, silicon, and bacteria. This ensures that different laboratories are using the same quality water when they claim to use Type I water, ensuring reproducible results.
- Maintains analytical accuracy: Even trace amounts of contaminants in water can cause problems in spectroscopic analyses, chromatography (e.g., HPLC), or microbiological testing. This standard helps minimize water usage, background noise, and contamination, increasing the accuracy and reliability of precision measurements.
- Supports regulatory compliance: Industries such as pharmaceuticals, environmental testing, and electronics manufacturing often operate under strict regulatory standards.
- System design and maintenance: Helps engineers and technicians design and maintain water treatment systems by determining which contaminants need to be removed or what levels are acceptable for different applications. This allows for better system performance and maintenance schedules.
- Cross-industry standardization: This standard allows for cross-industry standardization and ensures that laboratories, suppliers, and manufacturers agree on what pure water means.
In short, the ASTM D1193 standard is deemed necessary for the following reasons:
- Standardizes water purity for scientific and industrial use
- Provides consistent and valid results
- Provides protection against contamination in sensitive processes
- Supports compliance with regulatory frameworks
- Provides clear guidance for system design and operation
