Determination of High Molecular Mass Cationic Active Substance

Determination of High Molecular Mass Cationic Active Substance

Cationic surfactants are positively charged and therefore not effective as detergents in cleaning systems. This is because the surface of the skin and hair is negatively charged at the pH value of use. As a result, cationics bind particularly strongly to the hair fiber and are not effectively removed by rinsing. This can cause increased skin irritation and excessive softening of the hair.

In addition, cationic surfactants make the keratin surface more hydrophobic. This hydrophobicity on the hair surface increases the attractiveness of the surface for oily (hydrophobic) dirt, making it difficult to remove and increasing the tendency to re-contaminate. Most cationic surfactants are highly irritating to the skin.

The ISO 2871-1 standard, designed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), provides a method for determining high molecular weight cationic active materials. This method can be applied to solids or aqueous solutions of the active material. The method is not applicable if anionic surfactants are present. In Turkey, this standard has been published by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE) under the title: TS EN ISO 2871-1 Surfactants - Detergents - Determination of cationic active material content - Part 1: High molecular weight cationic active material.

In the tests and analyzes carried out in our institution, which has a wide range of technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and applies the most modern methods, national and international standards and legal regulations in force are complied with. Among the numerous tests carried out in this context, there are also high molecular mass cationic active substance determination services.
