With this method, all hydrocarbons with a boiling range of about 175-525 degrees, such as n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cycloalkanes, alkyl benzenes, alkyl naphthalenes and polycyclic aromatic compounds, are detected as hydrocarbons, provided that they do not adsorb to the florisil column during cleaning. However, volatile hydrocarbons cannot be determined quantitatively using this standard.
