Machinery Directive Tests No. 2006/42/EU

A machine is any set of components, at least one of which moves, put together to perform a specific function. Such an assembly does not require human or animal effort, but instead is powered by energy. The machinery directive applies not only to machinery, but also to safety components and lifting accessories such as chains and ropes.

The products that are mainly covered by this legal regulation are:

  • Machine
  • Interchangeable equipment
  • Security components
  • lifting accessories
  • Chains, ropes and webbing
  • Removable mechanical transmission devices
  • partially completed machine

However, safety components intended for use as spare parts and supplied by the original machinery manufacturer, special equipment for use in fairgrounds or amusement parks, machinery specially designed or put into service for nuclear purposes, which may cause emission of radioactivity in the event of failure, and weapons, including firearms, are not covered by this directive. is out of scope.

Briefly, the purpose of the machinery directive can be summarized as follows:

  • To promote the free movement of machinery within the European Union countries.
  • To provide a high level of security for employees and users.

Before a manufacturer begins the procedure necessary to evaluate its product for conformity, it is important to determine whether the product in question allows for self-assessment or whether a notified body should be involved.

Most of the equipment covered by the said legal regulation can be self-evaluated by the manufacturers. As long as the equipment complies with the directive, manufacturers do not need to apply to a notified body.

There are 23 exceptions to the category of machinery listed in the Annexes to the Directive, which are subject to special assessment procedures (Annex IV). The equipment specified in this annex must either be robustly manufactured in accordance with the standards provided or be evaluated by notified bodies.
