CNH ENS0103 Engineering Specification - Component Cleanliness and Acceptance Criteria

CNH ENS0103 Engineering Specification - Component Cleanliness and Acceptance Criteria

The “CNH ENS0103 Engineering Specification - Component Cleaning and Acceptance Criteria” standard, developed by CNH, an American-Italian multinational company , within the scope of material testing methods, has replaced the “CNH ENS0100 Engineering Specifications - Hydraulic Component Cleaning and Acceptance Criteria” standard.

CNH ENS0103 Engineering Specification - Component Cleanliness and Acceptance Criteria

This new standard describes recommended contamination detection methods and cleanliness acceptance criteria for hydraulic and mechanical components. This standard applies to hydraulic and mechanical components used in CNH industrial agricultural and construction equipment. The contamination detection method and cleanliness acceptance criteria must be specified on the component part drawing. This standard will also be incorporated into all CNH industrial agricultural/CE-related engineering standards as needed.

This standard supersedes both CNH ENS0100 and all other specifications and standards listed in the standards section herein superseded. Cleanliness requirements must be shown on all new hydraulic fluid power system component part drawings.

The component cleaning requirement is displayed via an alphanumeric component cleaning code consisting of three elements:

  • Method:
    • D - Distribution: Particle distribution according to ISO 4406 standard
    • V - Controlled volume (gravimetric): Weight of contamination per wetted volume
    • A - Controlled surface area (gravimetric): Weight of contamination per wetted surface area
  • Level of cleanliness:
    • A - High
    • B -
    • C-
    • D -
    • E -
    • F - Low
    • S - Special
  • Maximum particle size:
    • 0 - Not specified
    • 2 - 200 μm
    • 4 - 400 μm
    • 6 - 600 μm
    • 8 - 800 μm
    • 10 - 1000 μm

The required cleanliness of a component is determined by selecting the method and the cleanliness level and maximum particle size according to the tables given in the standard.

The maximum allowable contamination levels for each cleanliness level and method are listed in the tables. There is no direct relationship between the cleanliness levels of the contamination determination methods listed in these tables.

The distribution method is designed to be the particle size distribution in the wash medium used to wash the components or the particle size distribution of the liquid used in end-of-line test stands. Measurements should be taken immediately before the end of the wash or test phase. The wash methodology and wash parameters, such as liquid type, temperature, wash time, and wash medium filtration system, are defined in the component specifications.

To minimise measurement errors, a sufficient number of components must be considered to obtain a contaminant quantity of at least 2 mg per analysis, i.e. a minimum total surface area of 20-400 cm2 or a minimum total volume of 0,2-2 litres (depending on the level of contamination).

External surface areas of small components (such as fittings, connectors or adapters) may be included in the assessment if there is a comparable level of contamination in terms of wetted surface area.

The particle code specifies the maximum allowable particle size according to particle size classes defined in the ISO 16232-10 standard. Depending on the specific component and intended application, the particle code can be determined accordingly. This maximum allowable size is defined by the material and the two-dimensional shape of the particle. A particle code of 0 indicates that no maximum particle size is specified.

The component cleaning properties are specified in this standard as follows:

  • Recommended component cleanliness: The tables contain recommended cleanliness levels and codes for components or component families. These tables should be referenced when defining a cleanliness requirement, but the required component cleanliness should be specified on the drawings based on specific application requirements.
  • Custom component cleanliness: A custom component cleanliness code can be created by selecting the required cleanliness level and maximum particle size. For various cleanliness levels, the custom (S) cleanliness level definition allows for adjustments to the contamination distribution or maximum allowable contamination weight to suit specific application requirements. When using a custom cleanliness level, the maximum contamination limit must be specified according to the described contamination determination method.

Regarding extraction methods, the ISO 18413 standard includes guidelines for the selection and reporting of contaminant extraction and analysis procedures. Recommended contaminant extraction methods for various compounds are listed in the table titled "Guidelines for the selection of contaminant extraction methods, ISO 18413."

The method of compliance with cleaning requirements for each supplier and product family is determined through the supplier's control plan. Acceptable methods of demonstrating compliance may include, but are not limited to, ongoing process monitoring (long-term statistics) or periodic audits.

This standard is considered important for the following reasons:

  • Ensures machine safety: This standard defines the structural integrity, load limits, safety features, and performance criteria for hydraulic excavators. It reduces the risk of mechanical failure and ensures that the machines meet minimum safety thresholds during normal and demanding operations.
  • Design and testing consistency: Provides consistent criteria for designers and engineers developing excavator components (such as booms, arms, and undercarriages). This ensures uniformity across models and facilitates reliable testing procedures (e.g., stress analysis, fatigue testing).
  • Regulatory compliance: This standard helps CNH equipment comply with global safety and quality regulations (such as ISO standards), which are crucial for selling and operating machinery internationally.
  • Enhanced product reliability: By adhering to this standard, CNH ensures predictable and durable performance of its excavators. This ensures:
    • Increases customer confidence
    • Reduces warranty claims
    • Minimizes downtime
  • Internal quality control: This standard is part of CNH's internal quality system and provides guidance to production and quality assurance teams. It helps maintain production discipline and harmonizes product quality across CNH facilities worldwide.

Ultimately, the ENS0103 standard is critical because it helps CNH deliver safe, high-performing and compliant excavators.
