CNH MTM0108 Material Test Methods - Chemical Resistance

CNH MTM0108 Material Test Methods - Chemical Resistance

The “CNH MTM0108 Materials testing methods - Chemical resistance” standard, developed by CNH, an American-Italian multinational company, describes a test method for determining the resistance of cured paint films, integrated colored plastic materials, or pressure-sensitive decals (marking) to various chemicals used in the operating environments of CNH agricultural or construction equipment.

This test method may involve hazardous materials, devices, and procedures. This test method is not intended to address all safety issues associated with its use or application. It is the user's responsibility to consult appropriate, established safety or health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory limitations before use. This test method does not address the storage or disposal of chemicals. All manufacturer and local instructions should be followed.

This test method defines the chemical resistance testing required for the materials mentioned above and the additional chemical resistance testing required for painted parts and materials.

The testing process is as follows:

  • Immersion test: Sample materials to be evaluated should be immersed in the applicable liquid chemicals as specified in the tables provided in the standard. Each specified chemical, except grease, is added to separate containers for sample exposure. The amount of liquid in the containers is adjusted to ensure that no more than 50 percent of the sample material is covered by the chemical. The exposed sample surface area should be approximately 6,5 to 13,0 cm². At the end of each chemical exposure period, the sample is removed, cleaned, and dried.
  • Grease: Multi-purpose grease is applied to a sample area of approximately 6,5 to 13,0 cm² and left uncovered. Grease is applied to no more than 50 percent of the sample surface. The sample is cleaned at the end of the specified exposure time.
  • Decal materials: Additional xylene and dye exposure testing is required for all decal sample materials.
  • Sample surface coating deteriorations such as the following are examined and recorded:
    • Loss of brightness
    • Discoloration
    • Softening
    • blistering
    • Loss of adhesion
  • If any chemical has an adverse effect on the surface of the sample material, the sample is re-examined and recorded after a four-hour recovery period.
  • Paint and integrally colored plastic: For each chemical, the paint film and integrally colored plastic, the exposure time should be as specified in the table.
  • Stickers: Sticker exposure time for each chemical should be as specified in the table.
  • Xylene exposure - stickers: A piece of cheesecloth is formed into a pad of at least four layers of cloth. The cloth is dipped in xylene, and the sticker is rubbed with moderate pressure, using a 50 mm stroke with the thumb. The rubbing is continued across the test area 20 times (ten complete back and forth strokes). The exposed samples are evaluated according to the above procedures.
  • Paint exposure - decals: Shake the aerosol touch-up spray paint according to the manufacturer's instructions and spray a dense, wet film of paint approximately 25-50 mm in diameter onto the test decal. Allow the paint to set for three minutes. Wipe off any excess paint with a clean cloth. The exposed samples are evaluated according to the procedures described above.

In short, the CNH MTM0108 standard outlines procedures and requirements for evaluating specific mechanical or physical properties of materials used in CNH products. Like other CNH standards, this standard ensures consistency, quality, and compliance with the company's stringent engineering and safety requirements.

The primary objective of this standard is to provide a standardized test protocol for a specific material property, such as tensile strength, hardness, impact resistance, or coating performance, depending on the material or component in question. Specifically, this standard focuses on:

  • Assessing material suitability: Determining whether a material meets the performance requirements for its intended application in CNH machines.
  • Ensuring consistency: Quality is maintained across suppliers and production groups.
  • Supporting engineering design: Engineers are provided with accurate data for simulations and structural design.
  • Facilitating compliance: Compliance with regulatory standards and internal performance metrics is ensured.

The CNH MTM0108 materials testing method is of critical importance, particularly in the production of heavy-duty agricultural and construction equipment. This standard is considered important for the following reasons:

  • Ensures material performance and reliability: This standard is used to verify that materials meet stringent performance criteria before they can be used in real-world applications. This is important for parts that must withstand harsh operating conditions, such as:
    • extreme temperatures
    • High mechanical stress
    • Exposure to chemicals, dirt, and moisture

Ensuring materials can perform reliably prevents premature wear or failure in the field.

  • Maintains quality throughout the supply chain: By implementing a consistent testing procedure, CNH ensures that all suppliers deliver materials that meet the same technical expectations. The CNH MTM0108 standard eliminates variability between batches and suppliers, reducing the risk of inconsistent product performance.
  • Supports safety and compliance: CNH machines operate in environments where failure could lead to costly downtime, equipment damage, or even injury. The CNH MTM0108 standard helps verify that materials contribute to the structural integrity and safety of equipment and supports compliance with both internal and external safety regulations.
  • Improves product lifespan and durability: Well-tested materials ensure products last longer and require less maintenance. This directly benefits end users by:
    • Reducing operational costs
    • Increasing uptime and productivity
    • Improving customer satisfaction
  • Ensuring innovation and engineering confidence: For engineers, this standard provides reliable data on material properties, such as:
    • More accurate simulations and modeling
    • Smarter design choices
    • Easier integration of new or advanced materials
  • Minimizes warranty claims and costly failures: Using materials validated against this standard method helps reduce failures in the field:
    • Warranty claims
    • Repair costs
    • Brand risk associated with recalls or malfunctions

As a result, the CNH MTM0108 standard protects the integrity of CNH equipment, ensures consistency throughout the supply chain, and supports continuous innovation—all essential in a global industry built on durability, productivity, and trust.
