ISO 15003 Agricultural Engineering - Electrical and Electronic Equipment - Testing of Resistance to Environmental Conditions

ISO 15003 Agricultural Engineering - Electrical and Electronic Equipment - Testing of Resistance to Environmental Conditions

The ISO 15003 standard, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), specifies design requirements for manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment for use in all types of mobile (including hand-held) agricultural machinery, forestry machinery, and landscaping and gardening machinery. The term "machine" includes tractors and implements.

ISO 15003 Agricultural Engineering - Electrical and Electronic Equipment - Testing of Resistance to Environmental Conditions

This standard provides test methods for specific environmental conditions and defines severity levels for tests related to environmental extremes that may be experienced in practical operation of the equipment. This standard is intended for use in determining the suitability of these machines' equipment for use within a specified range of environmental conditions. The severity levels given are general guidelines and are not guaranteed worst-case exposure levels.

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • A display device is a device that displays alphanumeric characters or graphic symbols designed to be read and interacted with by the operator or service personnel to adjust and control the operation of the equipment.
  • Equipment is a self-contained electronic system containing electrical, electronic and mechanical components that are electrically connected to other machines (including power supplies) through connectors.
  • Malfunction refers to a situation where one or more functions of the equipment specified by the manufacturer do not work or do not conform to the manufacturer's specifications.
  • Location is the location within the machinery where the equipment would normally operate.
  • The normal mounting configuration is the orientation of the equipment when in normal use.
  • The severity level is the intensity of the conditions under which an environmental test is conducted. It is selected based on the intended location and the application of the equipment.

Unless otherwise specified for a test, testing should be conducted under standard reference conditions specified in IEC 60068-1. The intensity levels used should be recorded in the test report. Tests should be conducted in accordance with IEC 60512-1. Unless otherwise specified for a test, it is preferable to use the same equipment sample for all tests. It is recommended that a functionality check be performed before and after each test and, where possible, that functionality be monitored during the test. Combined testing is recommended where equipment is simultaneously exposed to the extremes of two or more different environmental factors (e.g., temperature and vibration) during use and this is recorded in the test report. Combined testing can be used as a way to reduce overall testing time.

Electromagnetic compatibility tests should be performed last, as electromagnetic emissions and susceptibility may be affected by previous exposure to other tests. The order of tests should be recorded in the test report. Tests should be performed in order of increasing severity.

Electrical and electronic equipment that complies with the requirements of ISO 16750 complies with the corresponding ISO 15003 standard. Annex C provides a summary of the parts of ISO 16750 that contain similar test procedures specified in this standard. It provides a cross-reference to help determine whether electrical and electronic equipment tested in accordance with the relevant part of ISO 16750 meets the requirements of this standard or requires additional testing.

The test methods prescribed within this standard are:

  • Monitoring impaired function
  • Cold and dry heat test method
    • Temperature changes with a specified rate of change
    • temperature shock
  • Moist heat, steady state test method
  • Moist heat, cyclic test method
  • Impact test method
    • Particle impact
    • Mechanical shock
  • Vibration test method
    • Random vibration test
    • Sinusoidal (resonance) test
  • Corrosive atmosphere test method
  • Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)
    • Dust test method
    • Water spray test method
  • Air pressure (altitude) test method
  • Chemical brush or spray test method
  • Solar radiation (ultraviolet) testing method
  • Display device readability testing method
  • Electromagnetic compatibility test method
  • Electrical environment test method
    • Working voltage test method
    • Overvoltage testing method
    • Reverse polarity test method
    • Short circuit test method
    • Battery-free operation test method
    • Temporary feeding test method
    •  Electrostatic discharge test method

The ISO 15003 standard is considered important because it provides a unified framework for electronic control systems in agricultural and forestry machinery, ensuring safety, reliability, and compatibility. The key reasons for this standard's importance are:

  • Improves safety: This standard defines electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for electronic control systems used in agricultural and forestry equipment. It reduces the risk of undesirable behavior (e.g., sudden movement or control failure) by ensuring safe operation of the equipment in environments with various types of electromagnetic interference.
  • Increases reliability: Electronic systems are exposed to harsh conditions: dust, humidity, vibration, and electrical noise. This standard ensures that components can handle these conditions without performance degradation, which is crucial for consistent field operation.
  • Promotes interoperability: This standard supports compatibility of electronic systems across different machines and manufacturers. This is especially valuable in agricultural operations where equipment from multiple brands frequently needs to work together.
  • Supports compliance and certification: Compliance with this standard helps manufacturers meet global regulatory requirements. It provides a benchmark for testing and certification of equipment that can be critical to market access in various regions.
  • Facilitates innovation: This standard sets clear performance and compatibility standards, enabling manufacturers to innovate while maintaining a fundamental level of system integrity and compatibility.

The ISO 15003 standard is essential to ensure the safe, reliable and interoperable operation of electronic systems in agricultural and forestry machinery, particularly in electrically noisy environments.
