EN 50155 Railway Applications - Railway Vehicles - Electronic Equipment

EN 50155, a European standard, applies to all electronic equipment mounted on rail vehicles for control, regulation, protection, diagnostics, power supply, and similar purposes. For the purposes of this standard, electronic equipment refers primarily to equipment consisting of semiconductor devices and related components. These components are mainly mounted on printed circuit boards. Sensors (current, voltage, speed, and similar equipment) and semiconductor drive units for power electronics devices fall within the scope of this standard. Complete semiconductor drive units and power converters are covered by the IEC 61287-1 standard.

Within the scope of the EN 50155 standard, the specific requirements regarding the working conditions, design requirements, documentation and testing of electronic equipment, as well as the practices necessary to ensure compliant and reliable equipment defined functional safety levels, are determined by the relevant railway safety standards. The software requirements for onboard railway equipment are contained in the EN 50657 standard.

The said standard mainly includes the following test methods:

  • General test categories
  • Visual inspection
  • Performance test
  • power supply test
  • Low temperature start test
  • Dry heat test
  • Low temperature storage test
  • Cyclic moist heat test
  • Electromagnetic compatibility test
  • insulation test
  • salt fog test
  • Vibration and shock test
  • Enclosure protection test (IP code)
  • stress screening test
  • Rapid Temperature change test

In the EN 50155 standard, the performance criteria are determined as follows:

  • Performance criterion A: Equipment must continue to operate as intended during and after testing, or during and after an environmental disturbance. No degradation of performance or loss of functionality is allowed.
  • Performance criterion B: Equipment should continue to operate as intended after testing or after an environmental disturbance. However, performance degradation is allowed during testing or an environmental disturbance.
  • Performance criterion C: Temporary loss of function is allowed during testing or during an environmental disturbance. The equipment restarts either automatically or manually.

Our organization also provides testing services for electronic equipment of railway vehicles within the scope of EN 50155 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors.
