CENELEC HD 629.1 Test Requirements for Accessories for Use on Power Cables with Nominal Voltages from 3,6/6(7,2) kV to 20,8/36(42) kV - Part 1: Cables with Extruded Insulation

CENELEC HD 629.1 Test Requirements for Accessories for Use on Power Cables with Nominal Voltages from 3,6/6(7,2) kV to 20,8/36(42) kV - Part 1: Cables with Extruded Insulation

The standard “CENELEC HD 629.1 Test requirements for accessories for use on power cables with nominal voltages from 3,6/6(7,2) kV to 20,8/36(42) kV - Part 1: Extruded insulated cables”, developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), describes the type tests and performance requirements for cable accessories for use on extruded insulated power cables specified in HD 620 or other relevant cable standards.

CENELEC HD 629.1 Test Requirements for Accessories for Use on Power Cables with Nominal Voltages from 3,6/6(7,2) kV to 20,8/36(42) kV - Part 1: Cables with Extruded Insulation

Once type testing has been successfully completed for an accessory, it is not necessary to repeat the test unless changes are made to the materials, design or manufacturing process which could affect the performance characteristics. Possible additional thermo-mechanical forces resulting from high current loads from renewable power generation sources are not covered by these tests.

Accessories for special applications such as submarine cables, ship cables or hazardous situations (explosive atmospheres, fire-resistant cables or seismic conditions) are outside the scope of this standard.

The test methods are included in the standard “EN 61442 Test methods for accessories for power cables with nominal voltage between 6 kV (Um = 7,2 kV) and 36 kV (Um = 42 kV)”.

Accessories covered by this standard include:

  • Internal and external terminations of all designs including terminal boxes.
  • Straight connections, branch connections, stop ends and loop connections of all designs suitable for underground, indoor or outdoor use. Specific tests for UV and outdoor weather resistance are not included.
  • Detachable connectors of the shielded or unshielded plug-in type or bolted type, which can interface with the bushing profiles specified in the EN 50180 and EN 50181 standards. Connections connecting extruded insulation cables (HD 620) to paper insulated cables (HD 621) are not included. The requirements for these accessories are covered in the HD 629.2 standard.

The following requirements apply to nominal voltage:

  • The nominal voltages of the accessories covered by this standard are 3,6/6(7,2) - 3,8/6,6(7,2) - 6/10(12) - 6,35/11(12) - 8,7/15(17,5) - 12/20(24) - 12,7/22(24) - 18/30(36) - 19/33(36) - 20,8/36(42) kV. Where the first value is the nominal power-frequency voltage between the conductor for which the cable accessory is designed and earth or metallic screen, the second value is the nominal power-frequency voltage between the conductors for which the cable accessory is designed, and the third value is the maximum value of the highest system voltage for which the cable accessory is designed.
  • The continuous current rating of a termination or splice for extruded insulation power cables is in accordance with the appropriate cable specified in HD 620 or other relevant cable standards and is suitable for operation at rated current and under short-circuit fault conditions at the specified temperatures.
  • The current rating of a separable connector is governed by the current rating of the mating bushing (standards EN 50180 and EN 50181).

Terms and definitions:

  • Connection (cable): Refers to the device used to connect a conductor to an equipment terminal or to connect two or more conductors together.
  • Sonlandırma: It refers to the device installed at the end of a cable to provide electrical connection to other parts of the system and to protect the insulation up to the connection point.
  • Interior finishing: Refers to a termination designed for use in locations where it is not exposed to solar radiation or weather conditions.
  • Outdoor finishing: Refers to termination designed for use in locations exposed to solar radiation or weather conditions, or both.
  • Terminal box: It refers to an air or compound filled box termination that completely surrounds a cable.
  • Implicit termination: Refers to indoor termination with additional insulation at the bushing connection and used in an air-filled terminal box.
  • Joint: Refers to an accessory that connects two or more insulated power cables to form a continuous circuit suitable for use underground, indoors or outdoors.
  • Detachable connector: Refers to a fully insulated termination that allows a cable to be connected and disconnected from other equipment.
  • Detachable connector with shield: Refers to a detachable connector with a fully shielded exterior.
