CISPR 14 Electromagnetic Compatibility - Requirements for Household Appliances, Electrical Appliances and Similar Devices

CISPR 14 Electromagnetic Compatibility - Requirements for Household Appliances, Electrical Appliances and Similar Devices

The standard “CISPR 14 Electromagnetic compatibility - Requirements for household appliances, electrical tools and similar equipment” published by the International Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) consists of a number of sub-parts published under the same title. Namely,

CISPR 14 Electromagnetic Compatibility - Requirements for Household Appliances, Electrical Appliances and Similar Devices

  • The standard “CISPR 14-1 Part 1: Emission” specifies the requirements that apply to the emission of radio frequency disturbances in the frequency range 9 kHz to 400 GHz from AC or DC (including battery) powered devices, electrical tools and similar apparatus, as defined below.

This standard is applicable to the following types of equipment:

    • Household appliances or similar equipment. For example, equipment used in:
      • For typical housekeeping functions in the domestic environment, including the dwelling and associated buildings, garden and similar areas
      • For typical household functions in shops, offices, commercial and other similar work environments
      • on farms
      • By clients in hotels and other residential type environments
      • For induction cooking or air conditioning in residential or commercial environments.
    • Power tools. Examples of power tools include handheld tools, portable tools, and lawn and garden machines, whether powered by an electric motor or electromagnetically.
    • Similar devices. For example,
      • External power controllers using semiconductor devices
      • Motor-driven electro-medical equipment
      • Electric or electronic toys
      • Personal care and beauty care devices
      • Automatic product dispensing machines
      • amusement machines
      • Cinema or slide projectors
      • Battery chargers and external power supplies for use with products within the scope of this standard
      • Electric fence energizers

This standard also includes discrete parts of the equipment specified above, such as motors and switching devices (e.g., power or protection relays). However, no emission requirements apply to these discrete parts unless otherwise specified in this standard. Products incorporating radio transmission and reception functions are within the scope of this document. Equipment using IPT within the scope of this standard is also within the scope.

Excluded from the scope of this standard are:

    • Equipment for which all emission requirements in the radio frequency range are explicitly formulated in other CISPR standards. Examples include:
      • Luminaires, including portable children's luminaires, discharge lamps and other lighting devices within the scope of CISPR 15
      • Information technology equipment covered by CISPR 32, e.g. home computers, personal computers, electronic photocopiers
      • Audiovisual equipment and electronic musical instruments other than toys within the scope of CISPR 32
      • Network communication devices and baby monitoring systems
      • Equipment covered by CISPR 11 (e.g. microwave ovens)
      • Radio remotes, walkie-talkies and other types of radio transmitters
      • Arc welding equipment
    • Equipment designed for use only on a vehicle, ship or aircraft
    • Equipment used only in an industrial environment
    • Effects of electromagnetic phenomena on equipment safety

Multifunction equipment may be required to comply with clauses in this and other standards. The emission requirements in this standard are not intended to apply to intentional transmissions from a radio transmitter, nor to its spurious emissions, as defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

  • CISPR 14-2 Part 2: Immunity - Product family standard" specifies electromagnetic immunity requirements for electrical tools and similar apparatus in the frequency range 0 Hz to 400 GHz, which apply to the following devices, whether powered by AC or DC (including batteries). This standard specifies immunity requirements for continuous and transient electromagnetic disturbances, both conducted and radiated. Unless otherwise stated, this standard applies to all equipment within the scope of CISPR 14-1.

The scope of this standard includes microwave ovens for household or catering use. Equipment incorporating radio transmission and reception functions is also included in the scope of this standard.

Excluded from the scope of this standard are:

    • Equipment for which all electromagnetic immunity requirements are explicitly formulated in other CISPR or IEC standards. For example,
      • Luminaires, including portable children's luminaires, discharge lamps, LED lamps and other lighting devices covered by the IEC 61547 standard
      • Multimedia equipment falling within the scope of CISPR 35
      • Network communication devices and baby monitoring systems
      • Arc welding equipment
    • Equipment intended to be part of the fixed electrical installation of buildings (e.g. fuses, circuit breakers, cables and switches)
    • Medical electrical equipment, including those covered by CISPR 14-1
    • Equipment used only in industrial environments
    • Equipment intended for use only in locations where special electromagnetic conditions exist (e.g. high electromagnetic fields near broadcast transmission stations or high energy pulses near power generation stations)
    • Equipment intended for use only on a vehicle, ship, boat or aircraft
    • Effects of electromagnetic phenomena on the safety of devices (IEC 60335)

Additionally, single-phase AC equipment with a nominal voltage greater than 250 V between phase and neutral and multi-phase AC equipment with a nominal voltage greater than 480 V are also outside the scope of this document. Abnormal operation of the equipment, such as faults simulated in electrical circuits for test purposes, is not considered.

In short, the CISPR 14 standard deals with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for household appliances, electrical tools and similar devices.

CISPR 14-1, which deals with limits and methods of measurement for radiated and conducted emissions, applies to household appliances, electrical appliances, and similar equipment. This standard covers the limits for breakdown voltage and radiated emissions, measurement methods (test setups, procedures), equipment operating conditions during testing, and types of emissions (e.g., click-through rate, continuous breakdown).

CISPR 14-2, which focuses on electromagnetic disturbance immunity requirements, deals with the same product categories as the first part and covers immunity tests and levels (e.g. ESD, EFT, surge, RF fields), performance criteria and test conditions used to assess compliance (e.g. functional modes, environmental conditions).

Complies with CISPR 14-1 and CISPR 14-2 standards, EN 55014-1 and EN 55014-2 standards for compatibility in Europe.
