The genetically modified cotton strain MON15985 was developed by biolistic transformation of the genetically modified cotton strain MON531 to express certain proteins. Certain proteins of the cotton strain MON15985 confer resistance against major lepidopteran cotton pests. Certain proteins were used as markers during product development.
Molecular characterization of cotton strain MON 15985 did not cause safety issues. Also, no conclusions can be drawn about the potential occurrence of undesirable effects for agronomic and phenotypic traits due to data limitations. Composition data gave no indication of undesirable effects for which further evaluation is necessary. Evaluations made In this light, it was concluded that the genetically modified MON 15985 cotton strain is as safe and nutritious as its traditional counterpart and other non-genetically modified varieties.
The general allergenicity of the plant is unlikely to change. Environmental risk assessment has not shown a problem in animals fed these genetically modified products. This cotton variety is considered to have poor survivability outside of cultivated land. It is also recognized that the probability of any adverse environmental impact is very low.
