The genetically modified soybean strain MON89788 designed by Monsanto is herbicide tolerant, but is not allowed for cultivation within the European Union.
MON89788 soybean species is among the genetically modified products approved for feed use by the Biosafety Board in our country. Accordingly, soybean and its products containing the herbicide tolerance gene carried by the MON89788 soybean species can be used as feed or feed raw material in animal feeds, provided that certain conditions are complied with. These genes increase soybean resistance to weeds. Risk assessment studies have shown that these genes do not pose a risk. If deemed necessary by the Biosafety Board, a re-scientific evaluation will be made and the permission granted will continue according to the results obtained, or a risk will be determined. If not, the permit will be revoked. The permit period is ten years. According to the results of the examination, there is no gene transfer from the genetically modified MON89788 soybean species used as animal feed to the meat, milk and eggs of the animals.
