One of them encodes an insecticidal protein, and the other is an antibiotic resistance marker gene that encodes a certain enzyme.
Corn strain MON863 is approved for cultivation in the USA and Canada today. In addition, in many other countries, including European Union countries, MON863 corn strain is approved for food and feed uses.
