MIL-B-83054B Detailed Specification - Compartment and Actuation Material, Aircraft Fuel Tank

MIL-B-83054B Detailed Specification - Compartment and Actuation Material, Aircraft Fuel Tank

The “MIL-B-83054B Detailed specification - Partition and activation material, aircraft fuel tank” standard developed by the United States Department of Defense describes the requirements for mesh polyurethane foam for explosion suppression in aircraft fuel tanks and dry compartment areas (cavities).

MIL-B-83054B Detailed Specification - Compartment and Actuation Material, Aircraft Fuel Tank

Partition material must be of the following types as described in the standard:

  • Type I: Orange, 1,8 lbs/ft3, nominal 10 mesh per inch, polyester
  • Type II: Yellow, 1,3 lbs/ft3, nominal 15 mesh per inch, polyester
  • Type III: Red, 1,3 lbs/ft3, nominal 25 mesh per inch, polyester
  • Type IV: Dark blue, 1,3 lbs/ft3, nominal 15 mesh per inch, polyether
  • Type V: Light blue, 1,3 lbs/ft3, nominal 25 mesh per inch, polyester

The requirements in this standard are explained as follows:

  • Sufficiency. The baffle material completed within the scope of this specification must be a product that is entitled to be included in the relevant list of qualified products on the date determined for the opening of bids.
  • Re-realization. Before any changes are made to the quality, composition, source of ingredients, or source of supply of the final product, the contractor or manufacturer must contact the qualification activity to determine whether requalification is required.
  • Materials. Raw materials used in processing the chamber material must be of the highest quality and standards for commercially available products of this type and must be the same formulation used in the qualification sample. The final product should be a flexible urethane foam suitable for use in aircraft fuel tanks.
  • Thermal degradation. Product toxicological data on thermal decomposition must be submitted for review by the military medical authority, who will determine whether there are any use restrictions related to the safety of personnel.
  • Tracking element. A tracer is added to each vendor's foam formulation for identification purposes. The selected monitoring element is submitted to the qualification activity for approval and must be unique for each vendor. The vendor also provides analytical test procedures to be used to identify the tracer.
  • Duration. The maximum delivery time from the manufacturer cannot exceed 1 year. If the period since production exceeds 6 months, the baffle material is inspected to find no evidence of discoloration causing deterioration of the surface. It is normal for urethane foams to change color due to aging and exposure to ultraviolet light and is not necessarily a sign of deterioration.
  • Coloring dimensions. Coloring pigments should not be easily extracted when the baffle material is used in contact with areas that comply with MIL-G-5572, MIL-T-5624 and MIL-T-83 133 standards.
  • Infrared spectrum analysis. An infrared spectrum analysis is performed in accordance with the standard and reported for the finished baffle material.
  • Physical characteristics and characteristics. The physical properties of the baffle plate material during manufacturing must be suitable for the intended purpose.
  • Performance. The chamber material must meet performance requirements under the following headings: liquid immersion, hydrolytic stability, flame arrester properties, corrosion and adhesion, sunlight, dimensions and tolerances, module identification and workmanship.

Unless otherwise specified in the contract, the contractor is responsible for fulfilling all inspection requirements specified herein. Unless otherwise specified in the contract, the contractor may use its own or other suitable facilities to accomplish the inspection requirements specified herein.

Inspection and testing of bulkhead material is classified as follows:

  • Qualification tests: temperature and humidity, test fluids, basic property testing and sample cutting
  • Quality conformity inspection:
    • Production tests (color test, density test, porosity - air pressure drop test, tensile strength and elongation tests, entrained solid contamination tests and steam autoclave exposure test)
    • Lot tests (reassessment and retest)
    • Process control tests (tensile stress test, tear resistance test, fuel and water retention tests, flammability tests, volume swelling, liquid immersion and hydrolytic stability tests)
    • Examining the product

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies carried out for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, carries out the tests defined in the "MIL-B-83054B Detailed Specification - Partition and interaction material, aircraft fuel tank" standard.
