MIL-W-5088L Cabling - Aviation Tool

The MIL-W-5088L standard, prepared by the US Military Department of Defense, includes all aspects from the selection to installation of cabling and wiring devices used in military aviation vehicles. Aviation vehicles include aircraft, helicopters, light-than-air vehicles and missiles.

MIL-W-5088L Cabling - Aviation Tool

This standard describes design requirements for the wiring of aviation vehicles. Many of these requirements are written as mandatory and should be accepted as such. However, there is also significant material intended to specify optional, preferential, or guidance-type requirements. In interpreting the material contained herein, the aim is to consider the overall approach of the standard for the wiring of each new type of vehicle. This approach includes personnel safety, vehicle safety, satisfactory vehicle performance and reliability, ease of maintenance, service life, and the lowest possible cost to the government. The purpose of the MIL-W-5088L standard is to ensure that the requirements for each new type or class of aviation vehicle designed are adapted to the application deemed appropriate.

It is important that the cables and wiring works commonly used in aircraft electrical systems comply with the requirements in the standard. The compliance of these cables with specifications is subjected to detailed tests in advanced laboratories in terms of conductor, insulation, voltage and temperature properties.

The MIL-W-5088L standard restricts the grouping of certain cables, such as electrically unshielded power cables and cabling to replicate vital equipment. Such cables are not added to existing groups unless specifically authorized. Cabling specifications usually limit the size of the cable bundles to a certain diameter.

Wiring is only one part of the electrical connection system. Wiring, connectors, relays, circuit breakers, power distribution boards and generators all form a system.

Aging wiring causes performance degradation due to accumulated damage from prolonged exposure. Damage is caused by chemical, thermal, electrical and mechanical stresses. Stresses are often caused by the operating environment and installation and maintenance practices. Wiring faults often present as broken conductors and damaged insulation that distort electrical signals or cause arcing.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer aviation vehicle cable testing services under the MIL-W-5088L standard, utilizing a trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
